I was briefly off the bandwagon after the Stanford game because I was still convinced Pyne was way better than he actually was.
Sure, we could nitpick Rees' playcalling and game planning, but every OC in the country calls poor plays and doesn't always have the best game plan. I was looking forward to the 2023 offense with Rees leading it, but now we have to hope whoever is hired will be an upgrade. And unless it's a clear home run, that will be difficult.
I was looking forward to the next few years with Rees and Hartman, Minchey and Carr. I wish him the best.

Otherwise, it's entirely speculative from a performance perspective. He did about as well as any seasoned OC at a mid-tier school. At times flashed brilliance, but also got caught flat footed on multiple occasions, and other teams were able to make better adjustments than he did.
lack of ability.
TR could turn out great in the long run, who knows? But right now he's an overconfident unproven OC. He's actually underperformed relative to the talent he has had.
Those are the rankings of Tommy's offense the last three years.
ND must do better.

when I woke up next to your mom.
He was a bum when he was QB.
He was a bum as an OC.
Find a coding nerd on campus, have them make an OC AI, and let the machine call the play. Even a bot could do a better job of calling plays.

That would make a fun t-shirt.

What he did this year was about as much as you could do given the terrible hand he had to play. Offensive line was a mess to start the season. WR room was a mess. QB room was a mess. We did all kinds of sets and all kinds of motions this year and our guys executed. That says a lot about competence to me. And I think the balance he would like in an offense between running and throwing is about right.
We'll just have to wait and see what he can do with elite talent against elite defenses.

blame for recruiting deficiencies on Rees and none on Kelly is not accurate. The recruiting situation on offense and at QB spot has been a shit show for the entirety of the Kelly era. Hard to lay that entirely at Tommy’s doorstep. He’s gotten two great QB’s and very good offensive recruiting since Freeman took over.
act of God). The QB situation has been a mess since 2010 or going on 13 years now. Tommy has been involved in some capacity all but 2, maybe 3, of those seasons.
All the blame is not on Tommy but to **ignore** that he's been largely responsible for everything we've seen at QB, playcalling, and the offense, in general, is fraudulent. His hand has been all over, in, and around the underwhelming O for a decade. He's recruited everything we have. He's underdeveloped every QB we have. How can we not place a lot of the blame there?
Note: I liked Tommy as a player. I liked the idea of him coming back. But this year was it for me. It actually showed that Kelly rightfully had him on a leash. In fairness, Kelly as your mentor and guiding principle has probably done the most harm to Tommy. This move to AL is a no brainer and a smart one or his career would likely be half what it could be.
It's almost impossible to develop Pyne or Buchner into top level QB play. Pyne because of his physical limitations and Buchner because he has hardly played any football in high school. I think he would have done a good job with Hartman, Minchey and Carr.

taken a very large leap with Rees since Freeman took over.
That said, I’m confident Freeman will bring in an upgrade in recruiting at the OC position.
