when he got hurt. If he would have been given the opportunity to play his game earlier in the game it would have gone much better IMO. The line was horrible, Patterson was still playing hurt or not playing well yet, as were the rest. People dropped passes. He was much improved moving the ball against South Carolina though the last interception was bad, even if the play call was worse. He sucked it up the whole game and had to come back to win throughout the game, got us the lead and then came back again. As for injuries I think it is BS that he is injury prone because ACLs can happen to anyone and the shoulder injury was because his body went down hard on his left side and the tackler drove him to the ground. Nothing against the tackler that type of tackle hurts a lot of people. It bothered strong man Jalen Hurts the last 6 weeks of the year and he did not separate his shoulder.
We know you have a love for Buchner…if only he was the answer. He’s not.
susceptible to that.
with his talent, he has a very high ceiling. Many don't agree with that. It is debatable, but what is not debatable is Buchner's history with injuries.
Fluke injuries are still injuries and when they happen year after year, the guy does have an injury problem, until he PROVES that he doesn't. In Buchner's case, he needs to learn not put his body in bad positions unnecessarily so often. For example, In the bowl game, for all the nice things he did, there were at least two times I can recall, when he put himself in bad positions unnecessarily (one resulted in a turnover, the other resulted in an incomplete pass instead of a 1-2 yard loss by him throwing the ball away while horizontal to the ground and about 2 inches from the ground landing on his throwing side).
This is a great way to do to his throwing shoulder what happened to his other shoulder to start last season. And for what, risk knocking yourself out for a game or half a season for a virtually meaningless play. A starting QB has to understand his biggest value to the team is ON the field. Yes it's a dangerous game and yes there are critical times when the QB has to risk it because the moment calls for it. Intelligent QBs manage these situations and know when to call a play over for the betterment of the team, but also know when to be more daring for the betterment of the team.
I, someone who likes Buchner and has defended him against numerous 'he's garbage' type attacks, from what I have observed, do not think he grasps this piece of the puzzle. Some just aren't wired this way (my youngest for example). I wasn't there to see what happened, but to me a high level athlete who misses an entire spring not because of playing basketball or baseball or even football practice, but going down the stairs, he probably isn't wired to think about consciously putting his body in smart positions to avoid injuries.
When you add this into his track record it kinda just fits. Going back to 2018 in high school:
•2018 Buchner tore his ACL in a non-contact injury on a fake punt four plays into his sophomore season
•2019 Buchner stayed healthy and had a monster Junior season
•2020 no senior year during to covid
•2021 as a Freeman only used in certain situations, Buchner was hurt multiple times throughout the season and was unavailable for several games
•2022 Buchner sprains ankle going down stairs and misses entire spring.
• 2022 Upon return in second game of the season gets knocked out for the season
While the covid year doesn't count against him, it doesn't count for him either. For all we know that protected him from having a season ending injury again...maybe not, we'll never know. What we do know is that since 2018 in seasons where he played football there was only one season not significantly affected (or ended altogether) by injuries. Sorry, there is just no glossing over this, until he PROVES otherwise and it starts with being smarter about the positions he puts his body in, as we certainly saw in the bowl game it has nothing to do with mental or physical toughness. He has that in Spades!
portal. Tyler is one tough mo fo as you said. Showed the big onions on the last drive in the bowl.
He has been inconsistent and injury prone though. He was inconsistent in the bowl with the ints although that can be attributed to rust. He also dropped a dime in on Lenzy. Thems just the facts. If he wins the job, hope he has a monster year, but will be holding my breath every game.

about ND football. You got all this from a no info practice press conference? You try too hard

are 5+ months away, so there is simply no point in fretting that a #1 hasn't been named yet.
It's highly likely Hartman ends up winning the job and the more legitimate competition there is between them, the better it is for both of them (and the team), so just chill and let the process play out.

Buchner can absolutely beat Clemson and OSU. Can our OC, IOL, Safeties, WRs, and LBs beat them...less likely.
USC is going to be tough for anyone to beat after they've purchased a couple of transfers.

I am sure MF is just trying to keep both of them happy at this point. He’s a good coach and salesman.
I don't think that Freeman is just trying to keep Buch happy. Reports out of the two full practices have been that Buchner has been better than Hartman.
That said, it's still like 90% that Hartman will start. Buchner has an advantage in that he already knows the offense and has more experience working with the WRs.
Threw three interceptions and two pick sixes
Barely can complete 55% of his passes
Is run happy and injury happy
Has proven nothing.
The South Carolina team that was missing half their players?
I'm not trying to put Buchner down but he hasn't proven anything thus far mostly due to missing so many games (due to injuries, covid, etc.) in high school & ND.

Still a good win as I believe they were slightly favored, but they were much further from full strength than we were.
I recall they came in game with 1 TE on roster and he was slightly dinged and then got knocked out of the game. They were doing spring practice early trying out DL on offense for first time.
While considering this it's also important to consider the rust factor with Buchner not playing all season while their QB was riding a season best hot streak.

He beat a diminished SC. ND was without it's two best players as well. It was a big game. Buch played great.
Buch can absolutely beat OSU and Clemson. He's not going to do it all by himself. He's not going to be Caleb Williams. He's not going to win it on his own. He's a good enough player to beat those teams of the rest if the roster is also capable of beating those teams.
Again, it probably doesn't matter because Hartman is the odds on favorite to win the job.
Injuries or not he has proven nothing. Overrated and underperforming. Not that Hartman is a godsend either but he has proven himself far more at this level. Until we start recruiting the types of QBs that will play on Sunday we will continue to perhaps crack the Top 10 every so often.
First of all, I'm not crowning Buchner, but you're making me defend him as if I am. That said, if you think that the game he played against SC wasn't good enough to beat Clemson this year, I don't know what you are watching. He's absolutely capable of playing winning FB against Clemson and OSU.
Secondly, this is honestly probably a 9-3 roster and QB about halfway down the list of our concerns. Our IOL, Safeties, WRs and Front 7 leave a lot to be desired as well.
Swap Buch with Caleb Williams. What's our record with this roster?
How many other QBs in CFB next year would be better than 9-3 with this team and this schedule?

May the best man win the job.
He could just declare for the NFL draft.
He's put in 5 years already. Would he want to stick around for a 6th year amidst uncertainty?
He'll be on the field for ND in the fall is the simplest answer.
To begin with, the reason he opted for another year in college was primarily because there are major questions about his fit in the pro game. He was unlikely to get drafted based on his work at WF.
Given that the BG game is April 22 and the NFL draft begins April 27, there isn't any time for him to try out for the pros and the fact that he would have gotten beaten out by Buchner wouldn't be a great indicator. Could he get signed as a free agent? Sure but to what end? He clearly needs to show off some NFL skills and it isn't as if he will get much of a chance as a FA QB in a pro camp.
If he ends up as #2 to Buchner, then he doesn't have a pro future anyway, now does he? If he wants to play his best option is to go into the portal to hook up with another college but that is fraught with its own set of question marks.
I think Sam is pretty safe to play the majority of the season, even if Tyler starts the first game.
