It was 98% stupid to ever ask an 18 to get a covid vax.

It was 100% stupid to ask 18 year olds to get the covid vax after we learned that the vax didn't stop the spread. (Which we learned about 2 months after the vax was released to the general public).

It is now 1000% stupid to ask an 18 year old to get the covid vax.

My post below addresses the vax mandate. Absent new developments, Im betting this one gets changed by enrollment next Fall,
Its out of date and nonsensical for this group to be required to get it, and following the science, it is not helpful in prevention to others for the students to be required to get the vax either,

At ridk people should get it, and low risk people should weigh the risks and benefits for themselves in their personal decision.

Any good doctor knows this.

which is ~3X the rate for "Seasonal Flu", plus all the other "Long COVID" detriments for many others...if you want to have in-person learning, then this is a very reasonable requirement...repeated gatherings in close quarters will always result in increased spread of an airborne pathogen (see link).

Not sure what the 'hubbub' is all about...the vaxes are safe and free...students should focus on their own 'mid-terms' instead.

this juncture already.

It very clearly does not prevent transmission, though it certain can be of individual benefit. It clearly comes with risk factors as well…as all vaccines do. ND is a private university and can do what they want here, but I suspect there will be some pretty stout pushback on this at this point and in this age group given the data. The argument that giving the vaccine to the healthy, young students is to protect the older faculty members with risk factors no longer holds water.

Anecdotally, my fully vaccinated child got COVID at ND while on campus under their tight guidelines….the only person in our family to get it. It’s going to happen regardless. The severity is mitigated in “at risk” people with the vaccine though it is extremely likely to have been of no significant help to my healthy child.
If it’s required, she will just do it. But again, my bet is that this gets quietly changed in the next several months.

Omicron is so mild, that if the people of impoverished southern African nations reported it being quite mild, then I would have to guess that a developed nation like ours would be just fine as well.

Also, the virus is mutating constantly, so any Omicron-based vaccines are going to be useless in a relatively short time.

Make no mistake about it... The original vaccines did a fine job of doing what they were supposed to do, and that was to combat the Alpha and Delta outbreak. However, they quickly became all but useless once the spike protein mutants (Omicron and beyond) came about.

Unfortunately, too many people in power essentially weaponized it...

…….only COVID removed it (by replacing it) years after the threat.

Such is hospital administration (and health center administration- esp on a college campus).
I doubt we will ever see a change until something bigger takes it over.
