His SciFi gets kind of crazy...it isn't just humans with FTL space ships.
He has a lot of books out. I would probably recommend starting with Pandora's Star (first book of his "Commonwealth Universe"). His later stuff (e.g., Salvation Universe) gets really good, but if you don't like Pandora's Star, no need to invest further time in him.
(I've added Project Hail Mary to my list.)

It really is a two book series: Pandora's Star, and then Judas Unchained.
It is kind of a two book story.
Interesting concept. A little too much deus ex machina at the end
Anyway, it was a crazy trilogy, but I enjoyed it.

Also aware that Cormac McCarthy has two new books out.

It's no walk in the woods but well worth the read and time.
Don't waste your money or time.

Attempt to get people like McSweeney to think they were reading something profound.
Pretentious garbage, imo.

Crazy but great book. I didn't appreciate the casual style of writing at first. But, the more I read, the more I liked it. Thanks for that recommendation, it was a great read.
I suppose Cryptonomicon or Diamond Age are next for me for Neal Stephenson, but I've got a few books in the queue right now, so he will have to get in line.
I recently finished his newest book, Termination Shock. It's about geo-engineering to stop climate change. Pretty solid and less way-out-there than Snow Crash.
it again, Too gut wrenching. Started the Movie, not good, gave up on it after reading the book
