Yes. Mandatory National Service for 5% of 18 year olds (beginning after high school)
1 to 3 years. Can be deferred. National or military service. Military service would require 3 years commitment (because of training).
National service would be defined and paid, but could be working for National Park or Forest Service, or Peace Corps or Habitat for Humanity, or organizations that help the underprivileged or elderly or handicapped, etc.
Every year of service = government paid year of college tuition or $30k/year tax credit.
Why can’t we make such a program voluntary? It can be, but the draft brings all demographics into the mix. That’s important.
