"Joe" (97 yrs old) of my Dad's WWII B-17 crew...we went on for well over an hour re-visiting some of his combat and life experiences...here are some interesting pieces...
>Joe grew up in FLA and as a 13 year old he was Babe Ruth's preferred caddy at a local country club during annual Spring Training for the Yankees..
- The Babe had a "Huge" golf bag that held 50-60 clubs (many of which given to him by companies)...but knowing no kid could carry it, he'd take out 4 or 5 clubs to play with a let Joe carry them
in his hands..
- The going rate for 9 holes was $0.25 for caddies, but The Babe would always pay Joe $2.50...a "Huge" sum for the 1930's, which Joe would take home to his grateful Mother...The Babe only
played on Thursdays and only for ~3 holes...often challenging Joe to a "Match" out of sight of the clubhouse, which somehow, Joe always ended up winning...needless to say, Joe loved The Babe, but not just for the money...he treated all the kids with love and respect and never cursed at anyone...no preaching...just a great example.
>Joe was the Radio Operator on the crew and on one mission he ended up saving all of them...when on the final "Bomb Run" planes could end up right on top of each other, so my Dad and Joe worked out a plan whereby Joe would keep an eye out of the window 'above' his station to make sure no other bomber was in such a position, and if so, Joe was to yell out on the intercom "Jump It!" and my Dad would quickly slew the plane to the side...and that's what happened on this mission...the bombs from the other plane missed them by 6 feet.
>Returning after the war, Joe took advantage of the GI Bill and became an attorney, spending a good part of his career with the U.S. State Department traveling to the Middle East and Moscow. He's still enjoying his life near his family and listening to opera performances.
I'm sure there will be future generations that will remember today's warriors, but if you see any of the WWII Vets this weekend...give them a 'sharp' salute and handshake in thanks.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting numerous ww2 paratroopers and it was an honor being on their presence. Unfortunately, many of them are no longer with us.
Thank you for sharing the story of your father’s Army Air Corps buddy.

leave it to other viewers to cast their judgement.
Also, you are quite pompous about things. You seem to revel in annoying people like Conor does. That also does not endear you to your audience.
When you post a pro-veteran story on Memorial Day weekend, and people downvote you, you know you've lost your audience.
looking to amass a fawning audience...I'm here to share my thoughts and opinions like anyone else...some will agree and others won't...no big "whoop". I'm also here to add some badly needed facts when posters like Baron get carried away...e.g. his total mis-representation of the very report he posted...or his assertion that the Biden administration didn't care about cyber security for our electrical grid...he 'hung' himself with both of those...he could have apologized, but just can't bring himself to utter the words.
One of the main reasons I decided to become an active participant on this forum in October, was because I saw a need to provide real knowledge and understanding of what was going on with the COVID pandemic. So much disinformation was going around here, and I had the unique advantage of being able to consult with family members who are physicians in the very disciplines that ae most involved in the fight against the disease. While Baron may feel "threatened" by their presence and try to question their 'existence'...they are as real as you are, and I'll continue to share their knowledge whenever it's necessary.
Another reason is that I stand with those 332 prominent Republicans who opposed Donald Trump in the 2020 election...i've made no secret of my disgust for the man and all that he represents, so you have, and will, hear more from me on that score as well.
Now, back to this thread...you have to have a twisted sense of reality to think that someone would post a bogus story about a man who saved his father's life in WWII on Memorial Weekend...I have no idea how anyone could even imagine the "gain" from doing such a thing...why in heaven's name would someone do that?...I sleep very well at night...don't know how you manage.

......and per your logic, “If you can’t prove it to be false, it is you who are making things up” if you question it, no matter how obvious it might be that it isn’t true.
Genius logic.
allegations of "fraud" without proof are toxic to any discourse. Using that approach kills any semblance of order and the free flow of ideas...with that logic, whenever 'Poster A' disagrees with 'Poster B's' opinion, they are free to declare it a made up "fraud"...case closed...'Poster A' wins!...If, however, a poster finds provable fraud...as I did with your posts about the MIT Report and the Biden administrations efforts to counter cyber attacks...the it becomes a "public service" to make such a call...and I did.
You, and your merry band of "Lib Haters" cannot simply appreciate what others on this board see...a warm story about a WWII veteran who had the good fortune to be a caddy for one of America's most renowned sportsmen and celebrities...none other than "Babe Ruth". In your zeal to "Cancel" anyone who opposes your tribe, you fail to see a 97 year veteran's recounting in it's proper light...a) he took a quick guess at how old he was back than, and b) he used a "figure of speech" to describe the 'enormity' of The Babe's golf bag and its contents...I can guarantee you that Joe never counted the number of clubs in Babe's bag...the salient message I got from him was that Babe recognized the bag full of clubs was way too much for a little kid to carry, so he took only a few clubs out, that Joe could carry in his hands...a super nice, and considerate gesture, in keeping with Babe Ruth's love of children (rooted in his own life experience).
Try taking off your blinders and join with the others on this board who don't get so carried away with their biases.

It's a lesson that needs to be constantly taught. Lefties will always accuse others what they themselves are doing. The second lesson is lefties will pack up their Rachel Maddow talking points and run for the hills when challenged on abortion. I see it here all the time. They will not talk open borders, illegals, or abortion. They cower like a long tail polecat in a roomful of rocking chairs. That puts an end to today's tutorial on libs and lefties.
Please get an education.

Tomorrow, he will be posting on COVID and throwing equal amounts of fertilizer once again.
number of clubs was unlimited...and there are several stories of amateur competitors with 30 or more clubs, so Babe having 40-50 (from a kid's perspective) is not surprising...and I've seen golf shop display 'staff bags' that could hold 40 of them.
I'll add this to the list of your un-researched and mis-leading posts.
I’d be interested in hearing all of those club choices.

making anything up here, Ara...thanks so much for your "fact checking" efforts...since that detail had no bearing on the substance of the story, I felt no need to question him on his age...but of course, you did.

Going to the same type of story again would cause skepticism in any rational mind regardless of the story. Then, when it doesn’t add up in timeline, and it drips of legendary Babe Ruth over exaggerations (ever seen a bag that can fit 50 clubs?), and it references unusually close familiarity to gain credibility. Who wouldn’t be skeptical?
Oh brother.
thanks for letting me know who you are...I promise not to forget.
As for the credentials of one of our family Docs, why are you so fixated?...are you insanely jealous that someone is that much better than you? I haven't even given you the half of that person's accolades...here are a few more...
>Chosen as one of just two students for "AOA" as a '3rd year', and asked by the Med School Faculty to join them in evaluating who the 'Senior AOA' recipients should be....
>Chosen as one of the "Chief Residents" after transferring into that hospital just 3 months earlier...not at all common.
BTW, you should speak like a Doctor when referencing "Harvard"...Med School graduates don't 'matriculate' to 'Harvard'...they apply for residency at either Beth Israel Deaconess, Brigham and Women's, or Massachusetts General hospitals...those three are "affiliated' with Harvard University...there's a difference...in case you never had to think about it...
(no message)
His made up ICU Doc with whatever Uber credentials......I certainly don’t care, What’s funny is that he lists honors so early in training. Any Dr at that point isn’t even out of the incubator. And he lectures me on BWH which is really funny.
and the three "affiliated" hospitals...unprompted...you, however, never did, and this is what caught my eye. You got on a roll implying that one of our Docs "turned down Harvard", which would give most readers the impression they were turning down Harvard University...but as I know, and you should, using the "Harvard Hospitals" term that I originally posted is common medical 'shorthand' for the three hospitals for which there is no "Harvard Diploma"...it's a nit, I agree...but a curious one.
BTW, I've observed up close the entire Med School, Residency, and Fellowship processes...I've even sat in on a Med School class and gotten a tour of the 'Gross Anatomy Lab', with all its cadavers on display. This in no way makes me a physician, but I do understand more than the average person when it comes to the training programs, so don't you try to "BS" me...or the forum members. If I ever need to get 'down in the weeds' on any medical topic, I've got top notch resources on "speed dial".
A word to the wise...drop your haughty pompousness before you get embarrassed any further.
BTW, a question for you....were you ever honored with 'Alpha Omega Alpha'?...or chosen for a 'Chief Resident' position?...it's okay if you weren't...most doctors haven't.
Though I didn’t go there for school.
Keep trying. What else is there for you when you are so, so far in the hole now?
figured out who's telling the truth, and who's trying to muddy the water...I'll take my chances with them.
BTW, you haven't answered my simple question...have you ever been honored with AOA selection, or a "Chief Resident" position?...Again, there's no shame in saying "No", since the vast majority of doctors can't answer "Yes"...i"ll take your word for it, since you're a staunch, upstanding Catholic boy who wouldn't dream of mis-representing yourself, or God forbid, telling a lie about such a benign inquiry.

Babe was a 10-15 handicap at that time.
I have never met anyone at that skill level who carried 50 clubs.
Much less anyone who would give them to a 10 year old to loop.

I’m sure you are humiliated. Which is why you blame Joe’s memory or me. How does this honor Veterans?
desperate to disparage me that you'll use a simple story I shared to call me a liar?...what the heck is wrong with you?
BTW,, I told Joe on the call that I'd be getting back to him this coming week on another matter...I'll ask him about the Babe Ruth story...will that satisfy you, or will you just dig in your heels and insist I'm making the whole thing up?...or will you say "thanks" for clarifying?...which will it be?
I simply questioned the bullshit in your story.
Not my problem.
here.
Look after your own lies hypocrite.
kind of person who would be a disbelieving 'fact checker' when talking with a dear family friend who happened to have saved my Dad's life in the skies above Germany in WWII...maybe you are.
BTW, written derogatory statements without proof are called "Libelous"...which is why they shouldn't be used in a discussion forum...

no way that Joe ever counted the number of clubs in The Babe's bag, he just threw out a number that conveyed the enormity of it all...the bag was huge to a little kid, with 'lots' of clubs in it...and the 'salient' message Joe was communicating to me was that Babe was a super kind and thoughtful man who loved kids and didn't want to overburden Joe...so, he took out just a few clubs to play with that could easily be carried in his hand...what a truly Great Man.
So, rather than 'See the Forest' and appreciate the warmness of the story, you have to count 'Every Tree' and..find a way to disparage the teller of that story...something that a twisted, anal-retentive would likely do...but carry on...I get who you are...and expect no more.
...to choose from when you'd had a few.

way he counted all the clubs in The Babe's bag...and remember, back in those days, there was no "14 Club Rule"...
Criticize me all you want, but don't extend it to a 97 year old WWII combat veteran's story.

By the third sentence, your post read like one of those Facebook "chain letters" that always snag thousands of people. GOAT has already pointed out a few things that don't make sense or add up, and the description of Babe reads like The Babe Ruth Story, starring William Bendix, where Babe goes into a bar and orders a milk. The greatest female mind of the millenium, Judge Judy, always said, "If it doesn't make sense, it usually isn't true." She's correct and being a little discriminating when being told stories by people doesn't mean you have to dress them down in public, calling them liars. In the many, many times I have encountered BSers, I maybe did it a couple times. It's almost always because the person has low self-esteem and telling tall tales is a way for him/her to feel important. There's usually a sad, true story behind it.
up?...and that I dishonored Joe - and my Dad - on Memorial Weekend, just to try and 'float' a fake story past you?
What kind of world are you living in?...I thinks I know...hatred...hatred...hatred.
Joe might not even know he telling a fib. The human mind blurs the line between fantasy and reality all the time and over time, he may have really believed he did meet the Babe.
