shipbuilding. Couple that with a dictatorship that has actively sought to promote a favorable business climate and it has allowed it to become an Asian financial center...
Brits laid the groundwork there more than Jamaica and continued to favor it as ex-pats after giving it up.
Never been there myself, so I suppose I only have indirect knowledge. But, I've always worked for companies with people there, and I've worked closely with them.
Their government seems to be a dictatorship that is dedicated to economic freedom and anti-corruption. Any other examples of that in history?
And, they seem to have made it an enduring culture. I'll give it a generation or two more to see how things go. Things can change fast in such a centrally managed system if the wrong person gets in charge. But, if their culture holds on to non-political anti-corruption practices, I will be impressed.
Commerce is king. Respectful of all religions. Bureaucracy can be a total nightmare.
Had an employee run afoul of the law. DO NOT do that there.
Have always enjoyed visiting. Thought I could live there once when younger but having dealt with problems there. no longer have that view.
Recommend visiting though.

The real differences are geographical (Singapore was always on major trade routes and Jamaica was just a good place for growing sugar) AND Singapore’s commitment to free enterprise. For example, compare the two Koreas. Huge difference in quality of life for the same reasons but with identical racial populations. If you want to crush economic growth central repressive government is the sine qua non. Bureaucrats have no motivation to make anything more productive
