Negronis are foul.
The current fad for “vodka and soda” is equally puzzling, for those of use who enjoy flavor. I know, I know, it’s low cal. But jeez.
Best classic cocktail remains the old fashioned, with a wet martini close behind. Love a mojito, but only when I make them - I don’t want bits of leaves floating around in my drink. And mescal > tequila, always.

Alcohol forward Sipsmith, Campari, Carpano Antica.
Straight with source ice in a large glass on the side.
Added slowly to extend the pleasure.

1:1:1 Rye, cognac & sweet vermouth (sounding like a Manhattan so far, but softened with cognac)...then add some Benedictine, and bitters.

The Negroni is foul because gin doesn't mix with Campari & sweet vermouth, not because of the Campari itself, which can be a great mixer...unless you mix it with gin. A Negroni Sbagliato is 1:1:1 Campari, sweet vermouth, & prosecco (or any sparking wine). Granted, it is less boozy, but it goes down easy, and it is full of flavor.
Spring is upon us, so for some outside day drinking, you can have a Campari Spritz (2 Campari, 3 prosecco, 1 soda, on the rocks).
Or, try an Americano ( equal parts Campari & sweet vermouth, top with soda water, on the rocks). The Americano was the precursor to the Negroni, the latter drink coming about when someone with zero taste replaced the soda in the Americano with gin, and made the Negroni.
If Campari is too bitter for you, you can always directly swap Aperol for it.

High quality ingredients must be used. It must be adjusted to individual taste. It must be served in high quality crystal. The ingredients will mix just fine if properly stirred while chilling.
If people are using Beefeaters, Campari and Martini & Rossi and serving it 1:1:1 in a cheap cocktail glass. then of course they have no chance to enjoy a Negroni.
I thought Beefeaters was supposed to be good entry level gin??? What gin do you use?
Try it with Hendricks, you still may not like it, but you will like it better.
One of the nice things about aperol is that it is 12%, just like the prosecco. So you are able to gauge your consumption a bit easier. Aperol spritz is basically a glass of wine. Campari is 40%, so you have to do more chismbop to know where you stand.
You can pace yourself, and actually know where you stand with Aperol/prosecco/vermouth, since the percentages are closer.
But, if Chris is looking for a boozy cocktail like the Negroni (which has gin at 80 proof or more), but that doesn't taste disgusting, than the Campari is a better option, because it has twice+ the alcohol of Aperol.
I like the Negroni Sbagliato with Campari, and I like an Aperol Spritz...but if you served me a Campari Spritz, I would enjoy that, too.
in the distance, rushing water, 100 y/o stone arch bridges, no one around. Kids and work are enough noise all week.

From this day forward.
Jk jk. Not a cocktail guy. That’s why I am still alive. I don’t really like spirits.
