Is this election about class differences or regional differences... or both?
Looking at the electoral maps, the Dems seem to dominate where the educated/celebrity elites reside on the big city coasts while the Republicans tend to appeal to areas filled with working class/rural folks.in the midwest and south.
The former have severe disdain for the latter as simple minded reactionaries... while the latter see the former as decadent snobs.
Both seem to use the "issues" as mere weapons to express their resentments against one another.
So it really doesn't matter if Trump and Kamala ever debate because they are merely archetypes for the respective sides' class/region... and barring a monumental faux pas... few voters will change their minds.

I think there are multiple levers at play.
Religion: The practicing Christian portion of the U.S. will absolutely be voting Republican. Folks can debate who they "should" be supporting, but this one's pretty clear.
Cultural: The radical gender and race ideologists/grifters will vote left. Always do.
Most everything else will be tipped based on prioritization (or fear) of policy: The border/immigration, fiscal/taxes, 2nd Amendment, etc..
Life is always complex but the view from 30,000 feet suggests this class divide is a strong factor.
