Trump did what he said during his campaign. Biden however, did opposite of what he said during his campaign. Biden is a typical politician in current America, say what he doesn't mean.

Gotta love Dems, who find they like free trade when it hurts the United States.
In years past, I was a free trade guy...during my exuberant years when I first discovered libertarianism. And, in an ideal world, free trade is the best option.
But, we are basically preparing for war with China right now.
When "free trade" means US companies transferring business to China just so that they can make a Wall Street number every quarter, maybe free trade is not in the best interests of the United States. When we are basically arming China with US technology transfers...maybe we should think twice about that?
At this point, tariffs should be part of an overall long term war plan. I hope we never have to escalate to actual military conflict, but I don't like our odds, and we should not be arming our most likely enemy with our technology.
Cheek's doctrine would be to pull all American manufacturing back to the western hemisphere.
I believe in free trade with your allies but not your enemies. And if we're going to expend military resources fighting terrorists, let's target the Mexican cartels and other factions that prevent economic growth and stability in the western hemisphere.
Fuck China for their role in supplying the ingredients for fentanyl, for their obstruction of the covid origin investigation, and their constant cyber attacks on our networks. And if the college kids want to protest genocide, maybe take a look at what's going on in China with the Uighers.
OK, but the question is, how do you motivate people to do that? They won't do it themselves.
Wall Street motivates them to extract revenue from wherever, even if it harms United States security. Tariffs, when surgically applied, directly reverse what Wall Street wants, and directly affect business executives' decisions. I've seen it happen. Right now there are 25% tariffs on some Chinese goods, and it directly changes global market behavior.
Regarding Mexico: It is a failed state. We could easily declare war on the cartels, and drone strike them into eternity. Then Mexico can regain power (or we can annex them if they want...but only after we deal with the cartels like the terrorist they are, not as "US criminals who have constitutional rights").
Agree on China. I work with good people there, but the regime is not a positive contributor to the well being of the world.

I agree with everything you said, CEOs for publicly traded companies are motivated primarily by stock price, often shorter term than what is good for the company long term. This is a problem I am not sure how to properly address.
Trump wants to put tariffs on John Deere equipment produced in Mexico, this is a response to recent layoffs (local interest here) and moving some additional production to Mexico. I am sure this plays well with JD workers, but I am not sure this is a solution.
The claim in the linked article is that farmers are cheering on the tariffs, I don't get this. Farmers are the consumers in this scenario, they will pay the tariffs when they buy equipment. But from a PR standpoint, this is a bad look for John Deere.
