Those media sources reported what JB had said...he then changed his mind...for a good reason...
...i.e. Weiss made the right decision after investigating since 2018...No Federal Indictment...then, the Politics ramped up.
Since the GOP wouldn't stop unfairly attacking Hunter, JB stepped in to do what Weiss couldn't/wouldn't...FINISH the Deal.
Hunter never harmed a soul...and he paid full restitution for his unlawful acts...plus...he apologized for all that he did and rehabilitated himself from a drug addiction. Any other plain citizen who did that would be APPLAUDED...not sent to the slammer. JB's pardon of such a person was justified, even when the hyenas around him bark and snap.
If you REALLY want to pursue Justice...make sure that DJT stands trial when he leaves office for his attempted theft of national secrets and the overthrow of a free and fair election.

Weiss was not the deciding person on whether charges are filed in the early years. Only after he was appointed later by Garland as special counsel, its status allow him to file charges in any federal judicial district, he filed criminal case against Hunter.
The plea agreement before Weiss became special counsel is the weirdest deal. The two sides interpreted the agreement differently. Hunter side said the deal gave Hunter immunity on other things that Hunter was being investigated. The prosecution side said the deal didn't mean to give Hunter immunity on other investigations. This led the judge to reject the deal.
You need to get the record correct before making your point.
Wait a minute Ty I think you are a decent guy despite our disagreeing on so much. Any body else
would have gotten time if their dad wasn't President and could pardon him. If I was his dad I probably would have done the same thing but then not be very proud of myself. Even less proud of myself than my son if I pardoned him like Joe did.
After reviewing HB's case, SC David Weiss felt comfortable enough to offer Hunter Biden a Plea Deal
that didn't involve a trial with the threat of prison...apparently because he (HB) fulfilled all the requirements laid out (pay taxes...get clean), and he didn't fit the Profile the DOJ was focused on...i.e. the DOJ in that time period only issued indictments for 100 - 330 tax evasion cases out of ~200M tax returns, and they were looking toward the biggest 'Bang for their Buck' from money laundering criminals and the Ultra-Wealthy...HB didn't fit those profiles.
Any other citizen with HB's case would not have been prosecuted...especially after they fulfilled EVERY requirement put on them.
Now, let's talk about the folks that Trump has pardoned...and says he plans to pardon...assuming you want to see Justice served.
