Sadly the choice in the ME has often come down to a secular butcher or the Islamic nuts.
The silver lining here is the big hit to Russian prestige, influence and presence in the region that this will bring.

Secular butcher has one priority: his own wellbeing and power. Put that at risk, and they will reconsider their actions. You can negotiate with them.
Put the Islamic nut's life at risk, and he just sees a quicker path to the virgins in heaven. You can't negotiate with that.
