Elon and Vivek do not own the federal government. They cannot walk in and begin firing people. Our bureaucracy is like a giant blob slowly but inevitably smothering the national landscape. It's how all empires devolve.
I'll wager they retreat from this impossible dream in frustration after merely a year.

Obviously, they can only advise the president, not fire people themselves...unless the President gives them that power by executive order, I suppose???

I don't think so. He doesn't know they were never authorized by congress from very beginning. If now you want to protect these regulations and government agencies from DOGE by going to Congress to make them constitutional, I don't think you will succeed. Because there was always a reason why they were not authorized by congress when they were created.
BTW, DOGE will NOT last long. Vivek already gave the last day of DOGE, July 1 2026 (if I remember it correctly, but you can check it).
