Shifting U.S. demographics may alter who white Americans see as racial minorities, potentially increasing the number of people vulnerable to discrimination, new Cornell psychology research finds.
In a series of studies, white participants who read news stories about census projections showing that racial minorities will make up a majority of the nation’s population by 2050 – a so-called “majority-minority” – were more likely to report feeling their status threatened and to see the faces of mixed-race individuals as nonwhite.
The threat of demographic decline, the researchers suggest, motivates white Americans to lower their threshold for assigning racially ambiguous faces to historically subordinate groups. Doing so bolsters white status by raising the bar for who is considered white, they argue.
Prior research has proposed such a process, but the new experiments are the first to test for it directly, the scholars said. They said the findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that demographic changes could strain race relations.

Add in a measure of Misogyny along with natural Conservative bias along with this study's findings and we may have an explanation as to why enough people elected a Felon, Rapist, Fraud and Insurrectionist when under "normal" circumstances, no believer in our Constitution, Rule of Law as well as Ethics and Morals would ever even consider such a degraded person for Principal of their children's school...much less President of the United States.

who have been in the majority would be fearful of losing that status in a few years?...and use their votes to try and maintain it?
Human beings evolved from higher primates who lived in tribes that fought one another genocidally over territory since time immemorial.
The history of our species on this planet involves horrific war after horrific war... TO THIS VERY DAY!
BECAUSE... we are ALL anxious about people who belong to different groups... like in West Side Story.
It's why Madison's Constitution is pure genius, because his checks and balances "attempts" to ameliorate these conflicts.
And, just as obviously, he missed the mark and we had to amend it several times.
BECAUSE... it is very tough to overcome the conflicts and anxieties buried deep inside the incredibly powerful and complex human psyche that evolved over millions of years.
Social; science (sic) defensively avoids the real problem. which is rooted in human psychology.
our species has made consistent Progress from an intellectual and educational perspective. Hopefully, all of us on this website linked to a prestigious University would agree that more education is the proper choice for our collective well-being and future.
Given that perspective, it's informative to know that there has been a steady increase in college educated Americans' voting preference for Democrats (see attached article) ...a party that is more tolerant and accepting of differences...differences of all kinds..and in today's parlance...DEI.
Since you have a 'blended' family history, I'm hoping that you'll agree DEI is a positive thing...and that fear, anger and hatred toward others, for no other reason than they are "Different", is not a recipe for continued improvement.
FYI...here's an excerpt from the attached article...

Over all, college graduates—which, in the exit polls conducted by Edison Research in collaboration with the National Election Pool, means individuals with a bachelor’s or advanced degree—made up 43 percent of the electorate this year. Of that group, 55 percent voted for Vice President Kamala Harris and 42 percent voted for Donald Trump. The numbers were almost exactly reversed among those who hadn’t graduated college, 42 percent of whom voted for Harris and 56 percent of whom voted for Trump.
Edison Research conducted the exit polls on behalf of several news organizations, including NBC News, and provided data to Inside Higher Ed.
College graduates’ preferences for Democratic candidates is a relatively new phenomenon, developing only in the past decade or so. But since then, that group’s support for Democrats has grown significantly. According to data from the American Council on Education, less than 10 years ago 50 percent of voters with a college degree voted for Republicans while 48 percent voted for Democrats, but in 2016, the majority of college-educated voters, 55 percent, voted for Democrats, while 43 percent backed Republicans. In 2022, about 46 percent of those with college degrees voted for Republicans while 52 percent voted for Democrats.

This 'Anti-DEI' campaign on the part of Trump and MAGAs is a reactionary and counter-productive movement. While not everyone needs to be college educated, it is well within everyone's capability to adopt a fundamental aspect of higher education...i.e. "Critical Thinking", which encourages a concerted effort to uncover the Truth...and that truth is...as social beings...we are ALL better off, with ALL of us accepting each other and working together.
