He had plenty of time to win the award.
Time for Dowd to shine.
I was lucky enough to be able to attend his farewell speech.
I get the feel that from a philosophical standpoint, Fr Dowd probably will align with Fr Jenkins (and you and I are in agreement on the strengths and weaknesses of that).
On a more superficial note, from a football program standpoint, Fr Dowd cares a LOT more about it than Fr Hesburgh, Fr Malloy, or Fr Jenkins did.

I will never forget his behavior during the Obama speech. The only peaceful protestors that were ever arrested on Notre Dame's campus were the pro Life protestors who merely stood by with signs. The university insisted on pressing charges aggressively the entire way through the court system.
When I said that he was a "nice Guy, I should probably amend that to "he is cordial". I am very glad that he is gone, but i don't think you will see much difference with Dowd based on what I heard, though the jury is still out.
