Forgetting about Corruption and/or Mismanagement can we even afford this kind of largesse when we are running $2Trillion defects which will eventually be paid for with much higher taxes or hyper inflation for the poor taxpayers.

None of this is about the debt. The debt is going to rise.

All of this is going to pay for a gigantic tax break for those making over $400K.

You'll see.

Two things need to happen: 1. Reduce Spending 2. Fix tax code

Dems want to obstruct #1, Reps want to obstruct #2. I'll take progress on either.

Thread Level: 4

Agreed. It is hard for me to get upset about any spending cut, no matter how it happens.

People need to remember: We don't have the money. We have to borrow it or print it.

It's not actually our tax dollars. We are stealing from future generations for all this spending today.

I'm willing to cut non-waste. Everyone else thinks their pet program is so important that we have force our kids to pay for it. OK. Fine. Let's assume every dollar spent is very important. Now, having made that assumption, we still don't have the money, so let's cut everything...cut every important program across the board.

Are there better ways to cut than how Doge is doing it? Maybe. But we will never know, because no one will ever try anything else. My grandkids will take what they can get.

It would be easy to minimize the impact of, say $2B to Stacey Abrams, if we had the money. It's funny I was just recently showing my 15 year old what $150 a month (from her job) would look like invested in a Roth, how much her contributions would grow over 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 years. The inverse is true when we look at the total cost of borrowing just $2B over whatever term it will take to pay it off.

An aggressive budget cut would be the $4.4T we spent in 2019 vs the $6.9T in 2024. But FFS, that was only 6 years ago!

As it stands we are barreling towards a debt spiral and accelerating.

Go Elon, go DOGE in my view.

.......as does 6th grade Math. Interest on our debt now exceeds our Defense Budget and will eventually exceed Tax Revenues if nothing is done to stop our profligacy

Thread Level: 4

And they are right. But this DOGE bullshit is not about saving money. It's about paying for tax cuts

True. Reducing profligate spending won't reduce the deficit, but it is possible to be against both.
