“I think America’s strange, in that Americans are always told that there are only two sides to sides to every story, two sides to every debate, two sides to every argument. And I am vehemently opposed to that idea . . . If you only have two choices, people are always going to make one of two choices. Which means people are automatically going to be against each other . . . Nuance doesn’t sell as well in America. Nuance means you can’t just take a stand and fight the other person. Nuance means we have to talk a little bit more. And until the American political system can find a way to represent the nuance that exists within America, you are going to create this false impression that there is This or That . . . no, no, no, no, no . . . [Because life really is grey].”- Trevor Noah,

...and the following excerpt...
-----------------
Part of the reason nuance may be ignored by some is because it is simpler to do just that – ignore it. It’s not easy to have a critically considered conversation about topics with substance. It’s also not easy to present a complex idea to the public AND help them to truly understand it. Communicating clearly, leading well to abide by those you are leading, is hard.
There is a reason leaders who don’t want their followers to think for themselves, simplify complex policies and ideologies to an either/or choice: they do not want them to think about it because if they do, they may realize the leader’s approach is destructive to the larger good as the issue is far from simple and quite complex. All the more reason to make sure we each are critical thinkers, thinking for ourselves, keeping an open mind, examining multiple credible sources and asking effective questions.
-----------------
As justification for Critical Thinking and Nuance, I offer the debate on "Abortion"...while only a small fraction of our population wants it to be banned under all circumstances, the vast majority of Americans understand that "Certain Circumstances"...i.e. "Nuances"... Justify its legality. Consequently, politicians have co-opted the issue for political gain as a Binary, and not nuanced, issue.

...admittedly, not a Catholic publication, but a well written explanation of why "Nuance" is so valuable.
Not sure if you can grasp it, Jake...but I'm sure others will.
btw, feel free to challenge the record of Democrats vs. Republicans when it comes to Walking the Talk on support for those who aren't in the "Elite" demographic. I'd very much enjoy debating you on that...be sure to bring evidence to support your arguments...I'm certainly ready with mine.

...let's take the Abortion issue...here on this Forum I've provided Pope Francis' exact words regarding fetal Personhood being debated...and then provided a detailed critique of his statement by a "Pro-Life" commentator, Mike Lewis, in "Where Peter Is"...who, btw, summarizes his article with the following...
"What does all this mean? Well, for one thing, it is clear that the Magisterium has acknowledged on multiple occasions that there is a debate about personhood. It is also clear that the Church has not always considered the life of a human person to begin at conception, nor has the Church definitively taught this. That said, the Church as always regarded abortion to be evil from the moment of conception. More recently, the Church has pushed back against the idea that "delayed personhood" is relevant to its position on the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception. It has taught instead that ife, from the moment of conception should be treated and respected as a human person. And in this, Pope Francis has always been in line with Catholic Tradition"
So, we have an issue that is truly "Nuanced". Pope Francis could have said that fetal Personhood begins at conception...but he didn't...nor does the Church Definitively teach it.
Furthermore, I...through a Google search...have provided the exact wording from the RCC Catechism regarding another issue that is definitely "Nuanced"...i.e. "Just Wars" (para 2309) which...after rigorous "Prudential Judgement" (quoted from the Catechism)...allows the killing of others, who are unquestionably Persons...IF, certain conditions (Nuances) are met.
Yes, I use "Google"...and No, I don't "Propagandize"...I provide and welcome opposing views, in the search for Truth. Are you willing to do the same...and enter into an honest and full debate? No one else on the "Pro-Life" side has been willing to thus far...although Ned has come close, but runs away when the one true Person (the Woman) is brought into the discussion.
What say you, Jake?

surprised you don't want to discuss the Abortion issue...just use it as a cudgel when it pleases you...right, Jake?
Any chance you'll get serious in the near future and think/act like an adult should...and delve into the "Nuances" of major issues...like Abortion?

I am a member of the educated elite (ND, Cal Berkeley, Michigan Law) but I live in Michigan and have many friends who are high school grads and blue collar employees, The worldview between the 20% of the population who are elite college grads and the 80% who are not is ENORMOUS… in every way imaginable!
Sadly, our political class remain blind to this divide and/or don’t give a shit… and I mean both sides! They merely try to take advantage of it for their own interests
There is no one trying to unite the country.
Tell me I am wrong and who is trying to bring us back together?
all those who are not elite...increased minimum wages for the working class...child care credits...educational grants...etc, etc. The party's "Bona Fides" go WAY BACK to FDR and his legislation...carried on with numerous benefits that produced new lawyers and other professionals through the Post-WWII "GI Bill"...that allowed a poor Florida kid, like my Dad's B-17 crewman, "Joe", to become one of the "Elite" after returning from that war.
Guess which party has done its 'best' to obstruct the advancement of the "Non-Elite"...you got it...the GOP. So don'r try to twist history and recorded facts.
