Straight-up autocracy. People will say “no way” now, and say he’s just trolling…then every one of them will support it.

Because he’s the Dear Leader.

From your article: "Repealing or changing the 22nd Amendment would require two-thirds votes in both the House and the Senate and the ratification by three-quarters of the states."

He doesn't have two-thirds of either house, and it would have to pass in 38 states, he only won 31 last election.

The democrats like to talk about him being a malignant narcissist all the time, you really think he'll be the Vice Presidential candidate on JD Vance's ticket? Why would Vance win the election just to turn it back over to Trump? Is it a technical loophole that could be attempted? Sure, but I don't see him talking anyone into it.

The 22nd clearly states "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice." He's won two elections now, he is not eligible to run for president again, and although there likely are some lunatics who might want to support him getting a third term, the majority would be against it, in my opinion.

Thread Level: 3

Exactly. The rules are clear, and the votes required to change it simply aren't there.

The bigger theoretical risk, in my opinion, would be him getting upset that he didn't have the support he wanted and scorching a few incumbents on the way out, messing up the election results for 2028. I'm reminded of that snake Lin Wood going off on the G.O.P. Senate candidates in Georgia in the 2020 run-off and encouraging Conservative voters to stay home; that the current candidates didn't deserve their support.

Thread Level: 4

You're absolutely right. But the rules don't matter.

Three ways it could happen (h/t Cilizza):

1. Trump runs as VP in 2028 with JD Vance as the presidential nominee. There is either an implicit or explicit understanding that if Vance is elected, Trump will be the de facto president again. Asked by Welker about just such a possibility, Trump responded “that’s one” before adding: “There are others too. There are others.”
2. Trump stays in office and the Supreme Court capitulates. He could simply say the 22nd Amendment doesn’t apply to him for some reason — and if a majority of the nine Supreme Court justices agree then, voila, he stays.
3. Trump stays in office, the Supreme Court rules against him and he ignores it. Under this scenario, Trump basically says I have the military with me and I am staying.

1. Why would Vance be ok with becoming the president and not being president? All of these politicians are narcissistic on some level, I don't see Trump talking anyone into that position.

2. The good thing about actually having a majority conservative Court is that they are far less likely to come that conclusion. I'd like to know which of them you think would side with Trump when the wording is pretty damn clear in the Constitution.

3. Do you really think the military would back Trump? What could possibly make you think that, if so? In my opinion he would very much not have the military with him. We take an oath against all enemies, foreign and domestic for a reason. Especially if the Court already ruled against him, he would be an enemy, any orders given by him would be unlawful, and would amount to nothing.

party seems to be propping up Bernie and AOC. The Democrats need to find someone new, someone more middle of the road. It's not Newsome. He has now started to try and walk back all the bullshit he said in the past, but the internet lives forever, and he just isn't believable.

There is a reason your party is sitting at a 27% approval rating. Find someone with common sense that actually relates to the American people and the party will have a chance.
