The US economy was roaring. The idea that we were getting beaten around is a myth.

Fareed’s take from this morning shows just how strong the US economy was. Until.

Biden ran wartime deficits at 120% Debt/G.D.P. ratio.

Spending was too high. But look at the growth of the US vs the EU & China.

The per-capita GDP in Japan would put them behind our poorest state. Same with France. And Germany.

We had problems. But we didn’t need to cram the world economy into the toilet.

Another Gore Commission would have done the trick.

I hear and respect your points here. I just don't agree.

We need to resolve this now. Nothing keeps me up at night more. Better a band-aid and we all move forward. I just don't share your confidence that commissions and committees would have gotten the ball rolling in the way we need. I could be wrong.

Foreign Trade as a % of GDP for the U.S. is the lowest of all developed countries...while it's

important, it's not how we keep ourselves fed (see linked listing)...conversely, other countries have ratios much higher, and therefore will need to find better trading partners, as Fareed Zakaria mentions.

If Trump were to follow through on this strategy, it would take an awful lot of Capital to build out the infrastructure here in the U.S. for all that added manufacturing...AND...it would most likely take decades to finalize...and pay back. If other countries don't send us Dollars, then that will make it harder for us to fund such construction.

Add to this the shortage of workers over that period due to a low birth rate, retiring Boomers and anti-immigration policies, it's not clear that we could actually operate those facilities...assuming enough nations wanted to do business with us. BTW, Florida recently started looking into amending Child Labor Laws because of worker shortages.

Either Trump isn't all that smart, or he's simply following Putin's instructions...Either way, this scheme needs to be stopped.
