The draft of President Trump's budget plan for FY 2026, which will be unveiled next week, calls for deep cuts in programs related to child care [good], health research [TBD], education [excellent], housing [good], community development [good] and the elderly [bad].
On health research, the budget plan would cut $8.8 billion from NIH [good]. It would totally eliminate funding for the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities [excellent]. It would halve funding for CDC [good]. It also would eliminate the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health [good in parts] and the Public Health Emergency Preparedness program [good in parts]. It also would eliminate a $56 million Narcan grant program that distributes doses of the drug and trains emergency responders [bad].

Especially because the money will go to offset tax cuts. And to the Pentagon.
Besides, Biden already cured cancer as he promised, right?
Regardless, if Pentagon spending, or spending in any area, is increasing, then that is wrong.
And again, I would be fine with rational, measured, thoughtful cuts.
Like the Gore Commission. Which balanced the budget.
I think cutting everything, my favorite spending too, is a good compromise. You don't?
How much medical research would that money fund?
Yes or no.
Then we can talk about tax cuts.

That said, the risk with this approach is in throwing the baby out with the bath water. There are worthwhile projects that will get killed along with all the waste.
But if they are worthwhile, there's time to adjust the budget.
it has been promised all along that worthy efforts will be reinstated.
There is so very much waste and deadwood to be rooted out in the case KC and research worlds - it hasn’t ever been done before.
