If Trump's assault on science and higher ed is not reversed, it will be castastrophic

Trumpies will love it because it attacks those eggheads they see as on the other side of the culture war. But it is much bigger than that.

Fareed explains it. He's one of the best.

Any project or research that was approved based on a DEI impact statement is flawed. Why?

Because the hypothesis is polluted by the presence of an unrelated variable and likewise the approval of the project itself.

Throw it out and start over. Really the only logical conclusion after the meddling in such matters by the prior administration. Given what you do, I'm surprised you aren't all in favor of research approved on the merits without regard to potentially discriminatory and prejudicial variables. Trump is doing your industry a big fat favor. Be thankful.

Hitler drove away the Jewish scientists. And now OUR universities are antisemitic? What happened?

Could it be that our universities have sold out?

Our universities are not antisemitic. Criticism of Israeli actions is not necessarily antisemitism.

And the crackdown on universities is not about antisemitism. Again, this administration uses issues like this to assert its power. Trump - like all authoritarians - wants to squash those institutions that can check his power.

I promise you he would be going after the universities no matter what had happened in reaction to Gaza. That is not what this is about.

And its source is not homegrown but is funded from abroad,

But there is also a tension in our country between our intelligentsia and the common man... and our universities are OVERWHEMINLY far left and elitist.

For most of our history few paid much attention to the eggheads living in their ivory castles... until they began to exert pressure on our governmental policies impacting all of us.

We are in a rebalancing phase.

I work at a university, remember. And I can tell you that these issues are far more complicated than partisan a-holes on both sides make it seem.

You are right that academia is too far left. No question.

But Trump's actions are just a page out of the authoritarian playbook. The issues do not matter to him. Power does.

The implication, of course, is that if it's seldom used, then it's basically bad law. Irrelevant.
