Voters showed up with proof of ID to vote using paper ballots. Over 99% of the ballots already counted. Winner declared on election night. Losers conceding defeat and congratulating the winner. No claims of rigged elections. Democracy can be easy if you want it to be.
What we saw last night was voters moving to the middle. The far left and far right parties saw their support disappear. The New Democratic Party and Green Party (think Bernie Sanders) share of votes plummetted from over 20% in 2021 to 7.5% last night. The far right represented by People's Party of Canada (think Donald Trump) dropped from 5% to 0.7%.
Don't be mistaken by the Liberals winning again, thinking this is an endorsement of Justin Trudeau's agenda. It isn't. Carney very publicly distanced himself from Trudeau's far left policies, even adopting some of the Conservative's platform as his own. He moved his party back to just left of middle. I'm not thrilled with the results but I accept them. Hoping the best for Carney. He's a really smart guy. Time to get to work.
Trump and Republicans ruined it for us.
You witnessed all the posters here who joined the destruction following 2020 election.

When you don't pay attention it is difficult to make sense.
Republicans wouldn't agree as they want to maintain control of their voter suppression tactics.
watched their second debate (the first debate is French debate and second debate is English debate). The debate host didn't show any bias.
Then the crazy’s took over on both slides culminating in Mango.
A few hundred thousand years after we descended from the canopy we behave no better than any of the other higher primates.
civilization which is all that separates us from that.
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

The beauty of a multi-party system is the fringe views get concentrated in marginal parties that have no chance of forming a government. It leaves 85% of the population to choose between the near left and near right agendas. Very few people choose crazy when given multiple, reasonable options.
make it more difficult for Canada to create policies for more independence from US ties?
If Carney sticks to the middle he will be fine.

shows that a probable large part of Canada likes trump style of governance and there could be another election in less than a year. Very bad is trump knows this.
had the shits of Trudeau and Liberal Party rule.
I defer to Rooney re whether the tariffs were the driver leading to liberals victory.
Carney is a moderate. “Liberals” in Canada are not necessarily Bernie Sanders.
In my opinion, and in no particular order.
1. Trudeau stepping down - The almost universal hatred for Trudeau through 2024 was unprecedented. The Conservatives could have put an empty chair up for Prime Minister and the chair would have defeated Trudeau. He was despised that much.
2. Carney - If the Liberals had nominated Chrystia Freeland as their candidate they would have lost. Carney was their perfect candidate. Smart, respected around the world, and generally not tainted with the last Liberal govt.
3. Trump - not the tariffs so much as the annexation talk. I don't think Americans understand how much that offended Canadians. It's deeply offensive. Like, we're pretty chilled people most of time but the number of Canadians that get violently angry when Trump says that stuff is shocking to me. It's unified this country like I've never seen it. Carney and the Liberals were able to tap into that and convince enough voters that Polievre and the Conservatives were Trump-like that they voted for Carney instead.
Honestly, we had two really good choices for Prime Minister. Different paths seeking the same destination. I would have been happier to see the Conservatives win but I think the country is in good hands with Carney.
