....miserable right now. A friend of mine in Toronto with a great IT job, a wife who is an RN and one child cannot even afford a house.

It's the "California Syndrome". Double down on the liberal socialism and blame everything else but their own liberal policies for their misery. (And then expect handouts - in their case unfair tariff advantages and free military defense).
