Neither gives a damn about the city’s financial distress

negotiates with those who are crucial to their election. No conflict there. One of the most corrupt systems in the nation.
P.S. I’m sure that MAS turns down excessive raises out of principle.

U.S. teachers earn 60% less than workers in other professions requiring comparable education levels, according to a 2017 report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. It’s a phenomenon Allegretto calls the teacher pay penalty.
Some Chicago teachers say the job is impossible not because of low wages but because they feel overwhelmed by paperwork and struggling with too few resources to meet the complicated needs of their students.

btw, the Teachers I know take a lot of work home with them...and while at home they devote considerable time to developing their lesson plans, and many other classroom issues...not just in-school work...while other professionals, with the same levels of education, clock-out and head for the nearest pub.
Using the "Meritocracy" measure, students need valued and supported teachers throughout their educational development in order to become the STEM and other professional college grads or outstanding trades persons of the future...let's not be "Penny Wise, and Pound Foolish" when it comes to Public School Teachers.

The Chicago student test scores are among the nation’s worst.
But I feel confident you will find a pony beneath this pile of manure

among other Conservative donors...here's an excerpt from the linked overview of IPI...
-----------------
Originally founded by Greg Blankenship, the organization was relaunched by John Tillman in 2007. It expanded its work and influence after Tillman took over.[7] IPI raised $341,000 in 2007 and $6.4 million in 2016.[8] In 2018, the Chicago Sun-Times wrote that "Its studies and opinion pieces on cutting government spending and boosting transparency became must-read material to many Republicans, some Democrats — and the governor of Illinois."[8] IPI was described by ProPublica Illinois as "arguably the most influential conservative organization in the state."[9] The Chicago Sun-Times described the group as "leading a crusade against government regulations, state spending and labor unions in Illinois."[10]
IPI formerly operated the Illinois News Network, transferring ownership of that entity to the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity in January 2018. IPI has received financial support from charitable foundations associated with the Koch, Mercer, Uihlein, and Rauner families.[11]

Here's another IPI rant on the same issue from over a decade ago...when, in fact, they cherry picked districts, and misstated inflation numbers to make their case. In fact, Illinois/Chicago teachers are by no means among the top teacher salary group throughout the nation.

Basically, this is all part of a ploy to privatize...and monetize...public education.
