My expertise with horse racing was watching the great Cigar tie the consecutive win streak (16) at the now defunct and future home of Da Bears Arlington Race Track. It was one of the greatest sporting events I ever attended. My question is will we ever see a Triple Crown winner again? It seems to be trending for the Derby winner to sit out the Preakness. Why is this the new trend with owners and trainers? Why was American Pharoh and Justify deemed fit to race but these latest entries are not? I figure $$$ has a lot to do with it somehow. So, what's the strategy in this? With NASCAR, Indy Car, and horse racing, I'm just a casual observer except for the big events.
Horse racing runs this town.
I have friends that are owners. The stud fees are too high to run a shit track like Pimlico and possibly shorten the racing life of the Derby winner. Sovereignty is a Saratoga horse, so it makes sense to skip that dump in Baltimore and recover and train here for the Belmont.
Throw in a successful post 3 year old career with Breeders Cup success, and trying to win the Triple Crown just doesn't measure up financially.
