In all honesty, I truly hope the president makes substantial progress…

On the Ukraine war negotiations. My concern is that Putin will trick him into believing his lies. Putin is a master manipulator and Trump isn’t the first president To fall under his spell. He (Putin) always sidesteps into a Russia/Ukraine history lesson to justify his war crimes. Good luck, Mr President. Don’t give away the farm and play hard ball with that Cro-Magnon looking savage.

Putin has sold his serfs on Russia’s spiritual right/destiny to imperialism

After wrecking his non military economy and losing many hundreds of thousands of men he must return with an “apparent” victory. I worry that he would not even meet Trump without some assurances of success.

I found his idea of swapping territories to be an interesting compromise. Perhaps a strip of port

to the Black Sea which would be huge for Ukraine. I know that it isn't fair nor right, but it is realistically the best that they can get.

If Putin doesn't agree to compromise and follow through, it's back to supplying Ukraine against him.
If Zelensky doesn't agree to compromise, then good luck with the EU.

If they both agree, great.

Ukraine requires firm security guarantees.

Hope it works out. My fear is that Trump wants a deal more than Putin does. Trump is also unfamiliar with the facts. These negotiations require detailed knowledge of the ground, Trump will never care to know. Hence, he can be manipulated.

But, it there is a deal, Putin has to know that if Russia thereafter breaches the deal afterwards, the breach will be considered an act of aggression against the United States.

And Trump needs to embrace that line in the sand more than Putin.

We gave those guarantees when Ukraine was talked into giving up nukes.

Obviously, we did not stand by those guarantees.

And all countries that buy Russian oil. Serious sanctions, not just talk like Trump has always done when it comes to Russia. Make sure Putin feels the deadline.

Which is what he will get if he does take a deal, or if he reneges.

That’s my hope, but history isn’t kind when it comes to Trump/Putin negotiations.

I don’t believe that. It may be that Dems are skeptical…

based on past Trump/Putin negotiations. I haven’t read about or seen one that doesn’t want peace.

And in fairness, Trump’s track record with Putin isn’t good.

I think he is right to be willing to meet with Putin. Many in the foreign policy community have criticized this move, saying (among other things) that this gives a reward to Putin. But I think it is a low risk, potentially high reward meeting.

But I applaud Trump for being willing to talk to anyone. He did the same thing with Kim in his first term, and I gave him credit for that too.
