The "national" polls are far out of sync with those in the Northeast coast. Illinois and Minnesota and the West Coast.
It also hurts their cause that these are media centers that distort the weight of their glam politicians.
There is no room for a modern day Bill Clinton to emerge.

The problem with polling is that the public is mercurial and can be swayed easily by dishonest media

As for polling, Trump sure believes in it …witness him authorizing his campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, giving Internal Polling data to the Russians prior to the 2016 election.

Go listen to local news in California and then to local news in Texas. Totally different!
The issue is... are they each catering to their respective listeners or are they influencing their opinions?
When you watch Chicago local news, you might as well be watching left leaning national.
NW Indiana has no local TV outlets and only two weak 3k watt radio stations, so Chicago local TV and radio it is. I look for the weather and sports. That's about it.
I recall when Don Lemon was a local CHI reporter & then anchor. Not exactly down the middle.
