This video is very recent, but the original 2016 Politico Opinion piece by Matthew MacWilliams, referenced in it, is attached. Comments encouraged..
.btw, my take...what's going on is pure Populism, which our Founding Fathers were aware of, and deeply concerned about. Different opinions are normal and expected, but we ALL need to live with the consequences of decisions made on them. Case in point...Immigration and Border Security...for all of our history, we've relied on Congress to write laws that deal with this issue...even Trump, in 2019, called on Congress to FINALLY fix those problems...since only Congress can provide the funding and rules/laws that endure. Yet, in 2024 when Republican and Democrat Senators achieved a shared solution, which significantly exceeded what DJT had asked for, he Killed it...ostensibly to preserve his #1 election issue. Then, once elected, rather than follow up on his earlier request...he's gone 'Full On' Authoritarian with hundreds of Executive Orders, and many of them Immigration/Border Security related. This is not the way our Democracy was intended for.

more complicated than that. Americans are pretty libertarian until you start cramming your viewpoint down their throat and lecturing them that they are not sufficiently enlightened.
The post-George Floyd/COVID world was not sustainable and wrought with all sorts of un-American inconsistencies and the adults stood up and put an end to the nonsense. Trump is delivering on what they wanted.
He may be going mildly overboard, but he's trying to dismantle the overreaching state in the time he has and getting the US back to a result-oriented country rather than a grievance-based country that is ashamed of itself.

chime in on a losing proposition?
and you won't defend it?...These are serious issues that are having a profound impact on our nation as we speak. I'd like to know what your response is to the PEW Research report on DEI, and Trump's killing of the Senate Border Security and Immigration Bill that a whole lot of effort by both sides was poured into. Last I heard, this is an Open Forum where we can, and should , discuss such things...let's do that.

Viewpoints" ;-)
PEW Research's 2023 poll found that only 16% of Americans thought that DEI was a bad thing (see link), and as for "Open Borders", Trump himself called on Congress to FINALLY fix our broken systems...which the Biden administration DID, together with right-minded Republican Senators...then DJT killed it, even though its provisions provided more funding and substance.

and liars figure, as they say.
flipped in two years?...Seriously?...if so, I think we've ID'd the "Liar" among us...;-)

Mark's admonitions on posting...and abide by them.
It is substantially correct that your incessantly bleated bill did not pass.
All opinions, positive and negative are welcome. However, keep in mind that this is a Notre Dame football forum. "Flaming", "trolling", "baiting", or any type of posting whose sole purpose is to elicit a negative response from other members will not be tolerated. Posters who establish a reputation for this type of behavior will be warned, and then removed if it persists.
I'm not going to ignore you and I welcome reasoned, substantive, discussions...that's why I joined. So, seriously consider what you're doing and we'll be able to have those dialogues.

Do you honestly think there are different rules for each Forum? ;-)...apparently, you'll try anything to avoid acknowledging your errors....much like your weak attempt to have OF members believe that your different Usernames are actually different People.

a system of checks and balances that heavily rely on those differences being resolved in Congressional Debate and Voting...that system is being demolished and replaced with Authoritarian Executive Orders from Trump. I'll repeat the example of DJT killing the bi-partisan Senate Border Security and Immigration Bill...it provided sustained funding and policy changes that addressed the most serious concerns for each party...in other words, Solid Progress. Under Trump's Authoritarian rule, we have pure chaos and rampant denials of our judicial bedrock principle...Due Process. This runs counter to what has previously made America the envy of all freedom loving people around the world.
Both Conservative and Liberal thoughts need to be heard...and respected...which means there needs to be an acceptance and expectation of "Compromise"...Authoritarians vehemently oppose that concept. Where do you stand?

...in their words...the Best Immigration and Border Security Bill in decades. That's called "Progress" and "Democracy". btw, the Biden Administration also listened to, and collaborated on other meaningful bipartisan legislation for Infrastructure and 'CHIPS'...Democrats are indeed "Walking the Talk" when it comes to the Democratic Process. Trump is the antithesis of that philosophy. Every country on earth is a MIX of Conservatives and Liberals, because they represent "Humanity". Authoritarians do not respect this fundamental fact, and I shouldn't have to point out examples to you.
Do the right thing...ditch Trump and all of his Sycophants...then rally behind Conservative candidates that are willing to respect other views and seek 'Common Ground' that will result in 'Progress'
Been explained to you countless times.

Congress for back in 2019 (see the link to his Presidential Announcement)...so, the 2024 bill couldn't have been all that bad ;-).

It did not pass. It did not pass. It did not pass.
...now we still don't have the needed judges to process millions of undocumented immigrants already in the country...who are law abiding and hard working (at least in the Agriculture and Hospitality Industries, as Trump stated)...nor do we have High Tech Scanners for cars and trucks at our Southern Border checkpoints to interdict Fentanyl...i.e. the primary means of trafficking for that drug.

...again...your failure to counter that answer...got anything yet?...if not, we know who to believe.

Congress in 2019 to provide 750 more CBP Officers...High Tech Fentanyl Scanners, and many more improvements. The 2024 bipartisan Senate Bill provided 1,500 more CBP Officers and 100+ High Tech Fentanyl Scanners, plus more in all the same categories Trump highlighted.
The Reason the Bill didn't pass is because Trump killed it so that he'd still be able to keep folks like you riled up, and to deny Biden his justified "Win" on this issue. In essence, DJT FAILED to "Close The Border"...and Fentanyl still enters the country in some of the thousands of cars and trucks passing every single day. How proud of him are you for doing that?

that's not gonna fly in any debate, Jake...
I've provided the details that are wrong with the bill. You pretend you can't read them.
And of course I'm right, as the bill was squashed.
Lankford's presentation to the Senate on behalf of the Bill..
Also, here's a summary of the Bill's features, from Sen. Lankford's website...tell me...what provisions are so onerous that the Bill should be rejected? (Note BOLD texts are my additions)...frankly, I've never seen any of these items in a post of. yours...feel free to dig them out.
---------------------
>No Amnesty-Period
>No Free Work Permits handed out at the Border
>No More 10-yr wait for an asylum hearing (goal...6 months, max)
>Builds the wall
>More ICE agents for deportations
>More Border Patrol agents for arrests (1,500 vs 750 requested by DJT in 2019)
>More asylum officers for faster hearings and deportation
>More than $650M is recapitalized for border wall construction next year
>Adds more technology at the border to interdict drugs and illegal crossings
>Increases detention beds to 50,000 to end catch and release
>Doubles the number of deportation flights
>Ends the Cartel trick of trafficking children with adults so the adults can enter the country faster
>Raises the standard to provean asylum request, so people coming to our border can no longer just say, "I have fear in my country" and get released into America for years
>Deports anyone seeking asylum with a criminal record immediately, instead of the current policy of deporting them years from now
>Deports any alien who could have resettled in another country on the way to the United States
>Deports any alien who came to America to seek "protection" but they could have just moved to another town in their own country and been safe
>Adds more asylum officers for screening to make sure the handful of people who actually qualify for sylum are able to be considered for that process fast and the majority of people who do not quality for asylum are deported faster
>Creates a new Title 42-like authority to shut down and deport everyone when the border is being overrun
>Currently when ther is a caravan of people, everyone is released into the county because there is not enough time to process everyone fully. This new authority would reverse that by deporting everyone when the border is overrun with too many people to process.
>Creates sanctions for the criminal cartels who traffic dangerous drugs like fentanyl and meth into our country
>Finally finishes vetting the Afghan refugees that have been in our country for two years and accelerates the processing of the Afghans that fought alongside our troops who are already in the country
>Moves our national strategy on giant step closer to zero illegal crossings a day
