No exemptions. The national service need not necessarily be military service.
Two advantages:
One, national service brings young Americans together from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
Two, when we commit to send US troops into places like Afghanistan for 20 years, the political conversation becomes more frank.

Disagree with him all you like politically. But that commitment in my opinion deserves respect.
He wants to perform social engineering on a set of captive individuals. Eventually, the set of commandable individuals will be all of society, but for now it is only the military. The Left always tries their social engineering in the military first. The draft is just a way for him to experiment further.
His goals have absolutely nothing to do with military efficiency...or even the military at all, in the end.
Veteran status is no excuse for pushing viewpoints that are anti-American. We never had the draft for social engineering reasons in the past.
Make sure you mention and respect my veteran status in your response. Or don't. I don't care. The policies Conor and I push should stand on their own regardless of our veteran status.

I fought the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army and all I wanted at the time was to go to college and fool around with girls like everybody else.505,3rd brigade,82nd Airborne,Danang,DMZ during the TET offensive.World of difference between him and I and I seriously doubt he was in country when I was. Finally,I respect that he served his country as we all are by going to work and raising our families.
Quick, get the topic of Afghangate further down the page!
It takes away freedom.
And it is economically inefficient - a fair draft would put people better suited to other jobs in the military.
So while it has advantages, it shouldn’t happen. And never will, barring unforeseeable crises.
I could command a platoon of volunteers, or a platoon of people who don't want to be there. I think we know which one would be more effective in war time.
I think the draft should be kept for emergencies.
Besides, exemptions will always get jusitifed, so his proposal is a fantasy...and just a distraction from the real issues we face today, like an incompetent commander in chief. I'm falling into his trap by even posting. Oh well. Doesn't really matter.

A draft would end up diminishing opportunities for minorities in the military.
I was in a combat arms branch in which minority volunteers were more highly represented than their percentage in overall society. If it were all draft, then we would be removing opportunities for minorities and the poor to join the military...further entrenching them on the government dole, which, as we know, would further empower Democrats. Keeping people on the government dole is a key to Democrat power.

Not sure how '5-7%' and 'no exemptions' coexist, but math is not a progressive strength. In times of strife, progressives reflexively call for the draft. Makes them feel better about committing others to military service.
Never mind it's unnecessary, and we are meeting our recruiting goals.
Exhibit #18484 for the case that you know nothing about progressives.
Let’s say they go with 6%. That means 94% of the young adults are not drafted.
But for the lucky 6% (beyond high school), then time to suit up — no exemptions. College can wait. So can working on the family farm.

The military is actually very diverse along racial and religious lines. If your intent is to ensure the wealthy are proportionally represented, good luck. I don't see that happening, no matter how the force composition is selected.
