Ryder Cup: Day 1 in the books

Well, that was a beatdown. USA alpha dogs Bryson and Scottie go a combined 0-4 while Europe's dogs (Rahm and Rory) go 3.5-0.5. Add in Tommy Fleetwood and there's a formidable three players that the US hasn't been able to match. Rahm especially is a beast. Watching him play yesterday makes me a bit sad that LIV is robbing us of watching him go up against Scottie and Rory on the PGA tour while all three are in their prime. He's an absolute stud. Come back, Rahmbo!

For the Americans, someone needs to explain to me why Keegan didn't play Cam Young in the morning matches yesterday. Young knows Bethpage better than anyone playing in the Ryder Cup. The guy went out and single-handedly destroyed the Aberg-Hojgaard duo, even with JT's lifeless corpse draped over his back. Same goes for JJ Spaun. He showed he's got the mettle to play in this event too.

For the Saturday morning foursomes, it looks like Keegan is going to stick with the plan that didn't work on Friday morning, keeping 3 of the 4 teams intact. Good for him for sitting JT (who's been awful) and pairing Young with Bryson. Having them lead off this morning in a must win match makes sense and I think they'll win it pretty easily. I also think it's smart pairing Schauffele-Cantlay again. Cantlay played so well yesteday, save for a couple of blips on the back 9 yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately for those two, they are up against Rahm-Hatton. Rahmbo was the star of Day 1. This match will be the heavyweight bout of the morning rounds today.

As to other 2 matches, what the heck is Keegan thinking putting the English-Morikawa team out there again? They get matched up again against Rory-Fleetwood and the Euro duo is going to feed them into the woodchipper again today. Huge mismatch. The fourth is an odd one for the US as well. I mean, I watched the golf yesterday. It was obvious that Henley was overwhelmed by the moment and seems like such a mismatched pairing with Scottie. Playing with the world #1, leaving him in bad spots and missing putts has got to make it so tough on Henley. I'd have benched him and put JJ Spaun with Scottie this morning. JJ should be playing more. Keegan says he's sticking with the plan. I hope it works out today because if it doesn't he's going to be heavily criticized for this morning's picks.

Keegan's right though. Only 25% of the points have been handed out. A long way to go. The US just needs to win Saturday. Get the deficit to 2 or less and you've got a chance on Sunday. I do think the Americans will be better in the singles matches on Sunday. Get the deficit to 2, and then all you need is to is win 7 of the 12 matches on Sunday and tie one and the Cup is yours. Go into Sunday with a 3 point deficit and you're going to have to go at least 8-4 to win. That's a tall task.

Anyway, the shotmaking was awesome yesterday. The drama was good but the crowds need someone to go toe-to-toe with Rahm and Rory and take them down. If that happens I expect the New York crowd to go bananas. Let's see if the Euros can handle that level of emotion. Looking forward to another fun day. Enjoy!

Most impressive, their playing partners step up for each other, especially with the putter.

Tip my cap to the Europeans.

Already lost foursomes BEFORE the afternoon. Awful showing by US.

Some disappointing performances by veteran players.

Morikawa and Schauffele for starters.

I questioned Morikawa being selected for squad as he has been in poor form for a few months.

Spaun was solid yesterday. Thought he should have played this morning.

Very happy for Cam Young. Has made great progress with his game.

Was thinking the same thing...just cut the deficit today and ride that momentum to a win

Sunday in the singles...good summary.

btw, while watching 'Live at the Ryder Cup', Brandel Chamblee has been critical of the U.S. team pairings...e.g. having a 'draw shooting' Henley lead off in Foursomes on a hole that favors a long hitting fader like Scotty. Then there's the back story on Americans getting $500K each...$300K for Charities, but $200K earmarked as a "Stipend" to be spent as the players choose. This is the first time in Ryder Cup history that such a payout has been done...not in the spirit of the event.

Fleetwood and Rahm have delivered big so far for Europe.

It does appear Young and JJ have the right stuff for this competition.
