The ugliness of the Bethpage gallery reflects Trump’s America.
Tom Watson congratulated the Europeans yesterday and apologized for the nasty comments and behavior of those who clearly crossed the line.
No condemnation from Keegan or the PGA.
But, the nastiness, cruelty, and classlessness exhibited by the gallery is a reflection of our President. It’s how he behaves.

If the Euros threw beer at Scotty's wife and yelled epithets at her, everyone on this tread would be
livid in their condemnation of that crowd...but that's the legacy we'll have to live with thanks to too many U.S. cretins. It would have been nice to hear Trump say he respects the fine players from Europe instead of saying he "Hated" them...not the kind of leadership this great country deserves.

Colin Montgomerie was subject to such vile abuse in 1999 at Brookline that Payne Stewart conceded the match. In 2002 the crowds at the Bethpage U.S. Open were so bad Sergio Garcia flipped them off.
Oh, and lest we think earlier times were better, during the 1962 U.S. Open playoff, Oakmont galleries made numerous crude remarks towards Jack Nicklaus, complete with stomping their feet while he putted. Arnie was totally embarrassed by them.

That said, did see 6 NY State troopers run across the 17th FW while I was up at the tee box chatting with Ben Crenshaw. So something certainly happened there…
Somewhat surprised the $750 minimum daily entrance fee didn’t skew the makeup of the crowd to the more considerate. Flip side, of course, if you charge people that much, some unfortunately feel they have the right to do anything…
Someone should really work on some creative US chants before Adare. Euros just adopt them from their football….
The Ryder Cup galleries have never reached Bethpage’s level of abuse.
