The technology isn't the problem, it's the people and institutions. Humans evolved through mostly times of scarcity, we now live in abundance.

For whatever reason, we seem to collectively crave suffering at a subconscious level.
Fortunately we tend to repress this sufficiently enough to get through our daily lives. It's only when we get overstressed that they leak out in the most horrific ways.
