The whimpering of our hollow generation.

Now we know why the young are seduced by communism... the incentives for following the lifestyles of preceding generations are vanishing.

It's taboo to say it but our "resources" are being exhausted by our senior citizens due to the dramatic increase in life expectancy.

And AI will only accelerate the trend.

Elliot was right! The world will not end with a bang... but a whimper.

OR maybe the future is just hidden for the moment.

Typical 2025 journalism. Let's find a few weirdos and imply everyone has this experience.

Home ownership rates are much higher than in the golden 1950's. The sky-is-falling narrative is maintained by slop like that article that ignores actual data.

It's tough to save when you choose to live in an expensive place like NYC and don't even see a dime from your paycheck until after 50% is already taken away. I guess the guy just couldn't find any other place to open a used furniture store.

I think there's a simple formula that isn't understood.

1. Don't go into massive debt for education unless there's a clear payoff in future salary potential.
2. Don't buy expensive cars until you can pay cash for them.
3. Don't go on lavish vacations you can't afford.
4. You don't need the latest iPhone
5. Take advantage of 401K Match and Roth IRA as soon as possible.

If you do all of this in your 20s, by your 30s you'll be able to afford a house and might even attract a mate.

Hollow Men, by T.S. Eliot

Mistah Kurtz - he dead.

A penny for the Old Guy

I

We are the hollow men
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other kingdom
Remember us - if at all - not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.

II

Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death's dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voices are
In the wind's singing
More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star.

Let me be no nearer
In death's dream kingdom
Let me also wear
Such deliberate disguises
Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves
In a field
Behaving as the wind behaves
No nearer -

Not that final meeting
In the twilight kingdom

III

This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here the stone images
Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man's hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.

Is it like this
In death's other kingdom
Waking alone
At the hour when we are
Trembling with tenderness
Lips that would kiss
Form prayers to broken stone.

IV

The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms

In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of this tumid river

Sightless, unless
The eyes reappear
As the perpetual star
Multifoliate rose
Of death's twilight kingdom
The hope only
Of empty men.

V

Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o'clock in the morning.

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

For Thine is
Life is
For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a whimper.

That was a tough read. All I read or heard was complaints and self loathing. Both my kids

Are in mid 30’s, both doing great, home owners, happily married with kids.
Most people of their friends the same, their cousins, which there are a lot of the same. Quite frankly I like and love all of them, mostly really really good and nice people.
I don’t know maybe it’s just me and I’m lucky.

My experience with that generation suggests that they have difficulty recognizing that you go nowhere in life if you aren't willing to work and delay gratification.

It is a WSJ article that appears on MSN.

Not flattering to the 30 year olds, suggesting a preference for communism.

An unexpected source of criticism.

Some very valid points.

Was the author’s purpose to mock a select group of self-indulgent mid-30s for their refusal to mature? Or was it to damn the entire generation? The data say the resources are available for princesses to grow up. Is the message then that effort, industriousness and sacrifice are too high a price to pay?

Complaining about the price of Spotify but dismissing the thought of cancelling it - wow.
