With AI roaring on like a freight train...the question is...should it without any type of oversight?
We already know what the reality will be. People will do what benefits themselves in the short term without a clear picture of where things are headed or what will really benefit the whole of humanity. (Perhaps think of College Football as a microcosm.)
But...should they?

Yes, but how? Hard to find a governance analog.
And if it is too heavy handed, developers will just go offshore.

This is one of those things like the internet where too much $$ behind it and politicians won't
regulate it. Instead, the trade off was to put the guy in charge of the UFC on Facebook's board.

More akin to the atomic bomb. Have to do it because the other guy will…with incomplete understanding

I lean towards Elon's perspective, the only way to counter bad AI is with good AI
