Without marriage, there is no clear alternative mechanism for ensuring intergenerational continuity.

The key division in our society is between the sexes.

Until relatively recently, gender roles were dictated by our history as higher primates whose lives depended on a division of labor, broadly speaking, between hunters and home tenders AND

by our relatively short life spans.

We had very few choices... until late in the last century.

Today... we see our choices as far far less limited.

As a result....fewer and fewer people are willing to forgo the pleasures of freedom from responsibility to raise children.

It's an entirely novel form of societal decadence.
