Hope you chumps can read this. Ignatius is the best in the business these days.
Some key paragraphs:
“If there’s one lesson America and Israel should have learned in recent decades, it’s that military success doesn’t usually translate to political victory — in Gaza, Afghanistan or, now, Iran. The adversary keeps coming back. The Israelis have learned that they have to keep “mowing the grass,” the harsh phrase they use for the cycle of recurring violence. America, after avoiding an all-out clash with Iran for 47 years, may now be caught in a similar cycle.”
“ Let’s recognize the obvious: A clear pattern in modern warfare is that “strategic” bombing designed to break the popular will usually backfires. People dig in, rather than surrender. They keep fighting in what seems a lost cause. Even under a miserable government like the Iranian regime, there is national pride, identity and resistance to control by foreigners.”

we should obliterate Kharg Island and end their capacity to export oil.
Let them dig into their caves.

or the Punic Wars would have been over in weeks rather than decades.
...when they salted the fields, etc.
Same with the Jews until the Bar Kokhba revolt. Half measures don't work with true believers, unfortunately.

I was against the Iraq War on the premise you don't attack a country for what they possibly might do someday. Same thing here.
Iran can justifiably say, "See? We were attacked, which is why we need to develop a nuclear weapon, the same as what our adversary has."
George W. Bush was the worst president in my lifetime. Donald Trump might go down as the second solely because of this. I'd rather suffer through the main Democrat platform of woke ideology over this war.
Not defending that war. It was awful.
But Bush did good things too.
Trump tried to kill PEPFAR, but failed.
He’s the worst. And it’s not close.
Otherwise you’d be saying that about him and not WBush.
That’s what the president posted this morning. He was talking about the Iranians.
Who sounds more like a deranged scumbag?
Or are you just not happy with Trump for saying the truth out loud.
When we go to war against a foreign sovereign, the decision should have overwhelming support of Congress coupled with overwhelming legal justification, under US and international law. When we meet those standards, our allies and the world stand with us.
However, as in this case, and like many other instances where this Administration has shown utter disregard for the rule of law, we embolden our adversaries to do as they please. We no longer have standing.
So when their proxies blow up a Disney cruise ship, or kidnap and torture Americans, or commit terrorist strikes against American targets, …. we have invited such acts.
Our entire case against Putin for invading Ukraine 4 years ago, now rings hollow.

The peace is always harder to win than the war...especially when you are fighting jihadists. (Look at how many muslims are attacking us domestically now. We fight true believers of the Mohammad cult (which is why we should not let so many of them into our country).
This is no ordinary war. It will likely last 100 years, unless the Iranian people choose to stop it.
Granted, democracies are notorious for having a short attention span, so, periodically, our politicians will lead the electorate to believe that the war is over. This will pause the conflict after major gains, allowing our enemy to rebuild and re-arm. Then we will be back at it again, only to defeat them 80%, at which time we can claim victory (again)...and allow them to rebuild and re-arm, and repeat the process. The war with islamism will not be a short one, and anyone who tells you it should be, well, they are just trying to make a short term domestic political gain to consolidate power for their party...they are not looking out for the best interests of the country. Democracies have a hard time showing backbone for such a long time. The only reason Israel can pull it off is because they have been under obvious existential threat all this time, and they have the memory of the Holocaust to keep them focused. October 7th showed that their enemies would repeat the Holocaust now if they could. Iran is trying to put us under that same threat; Trump is likely only postponing that.
Don't worry, though. I'm sure the Democrats will regain power, and start sending war reparations to Iran to help them rebuild and threaten us again.
They can never be allowed to have nuclear weapons. If their people want to live with no freedoms, so be it. They could revolt, but they seem incapable.
