I've seen allegations like this in other places I visit, and none of it actually attributed anything quoting Hegseth saying it was a "mission from God," "Christian Crusade," or "religious war."

Most of it has extrapolated that Hegseth is a Christian and says Christian things, therefore this is X. The worst one I read was an article written saying the same based off an anonymous complaint by an NCO about their commander.

If you can post the text I will read it, but right now this sounds like more of the same.

He spoke of “overwhelming force” and the U.S. military’s unmatched ability to rain “death and destruction from above” on its “apocalyptic” Iranian foes.

Then, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, standing in the Pentagon, issued a call to the American people for a specific kind of wartime prayer. He asked them to pray for victory in battle and the safety of their troops.

“Every day, on bended knee, with your family, in your schools, in your churches,” he said, “in the name of Jesus Christ.”

At a time when the U.S. and Israeli militaries are dropping thousands of bombs on a majority-Shiite Muslim nation, the explicitly Christian nature of Mr. Hegseth’s call stood out.

Did he ask for a wartime prayer, or did he ask for people to pray for the safety of the troops? What was the exact quote?

He does come off as a bit evangelical from what I've heard from him. It does not surprise me that he asked for prayers, even in the name of Jesus.

Hegseth is explicitly Christian, or at least he pretends to be, I have no idea, I don't know the guy personally. It only stands out if you are looking for a reason to be mad about it.

I don't have a problem with people calling out Hegseth for the dumb shit. I am not trying to defend him, but as I stated, last time I saw this, it was a crock of extrapolated shit.

Tattooed on Mr. Hegseth’s right biceps is the Latin phrase “Deus vult,” or “God wills it,” which he has described as a “battle cry” of the Crusades, the ruthless medieval wars where Christian warriors fought to take over Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Mr. Hegseth sees those battles as perhaps the most formative moment in the history of the free world.

In his book “American Crusade,” published in 2020, he describes the Crusades as “bloody” and “full of unspeakable tragedy,” but argues that they were justified because they saved a Christian Europe from the onslaught of Islam.

“Do you enjoy Western civilization? Freedom? Equal justice? Thank a crusader,” he writes in the book. “If not for the Crusades, there would have been no Protestant Reformation or Renaissance. There would be no Europe and no America.”

I saw reference to his tattoos in the same articles that I talked about before. Again, if you want to post the full text of the article for me to read, then by all means do.

If you want to discuss what he's actually saying, I'm all for it. If you want to regurgitate a bunch of writers extrapolating nonsense rather than doing their job and actually reporting, that's your choice as well.

Ought not our Secretary of Defense understand that our military is not an arm of Christianity?

Just in case you can't understand, this next bit is sarcasm: Never in my 20+ years of service did they ever tell me that service was separate from Christianity. Especially considering that I don't ascribe to any particular Faith myself, I've just been hoping they wouldn't notice.

It's bad journalism to say this guy has tattoos of what he thinks is a war chant from the crusades, and he acts very Christian, so this war with Iran is him trying to start another crusade, and have no actual quotes that supports the position your writing about. I know a shit ton of inked service members who just get shit they think sounds cool tattooed on them.

I'm familiar with the separation of Church and State. I'm also of the opinion that it doesn't mean what it was supposed to mean anymore. People fled England for religious freedom because the king was the head of the state, and the head of the Church of England. The Founding Fathers obviously didn't want that to happen here. They wanted no State Religion. Hence why they came up with separation of Church and State.
