If an illegal commits a crime in this country... the US asserts "jurisdiction" over that person.

So if someone enters this country illegally... he or she ought to commit a crime to gain legal residency status.

By the way... this argument would be acceptable on a law school test... or at least would earn credit for spotting the issue.
