to use the opportunity to foment their radical base about the "Politicization of the SCOTUS" in order to justify packing the court down the road.
The case was always one that the SCOTUS would not choose to take....the state rules on a state election fall squarely into the purview of the state supreme court.
But the Dems went forward anyways (if only to try to mollify their furious base). After sending the appeal petition to the wrong court (They sent it to the VA SC rather than the SCOTUS), and after the VA SC was kind enough to recognize their error and make them aware of their mistake in timely fashion as well, the Dems went forward anyways.
Perhaps the Dems hoped that the case would be brought to the only purely political SCOTUS member - KBJ? Unclear. But this was stupid to even pursue as the SCOTUS precedent for state cases such as these is well established.
Now they have to deal with their angry base.
