to use the opportunity to foment their radical base about the "Politicization of the SCOTUS" in order to justify packing the court down the road.
The case was always one that the SCOTUS would not choose to take....the state rules on a state election fall squarely into the purview of the state supreme court.
But the Dems went forward anyways (if only to try to mollify their furious base). After sending the appeal petition to the wrong court (They sent it to the VA SC rather than the SCOTUS), and after the VA SC was kind enough to recognize their error and make them aware of their mistake in timely fashion as well, the Dems went forward anyways.
Perhaps the Dems hoped that the case would be brought to the only purely political SCOTUS member - KBJ? Unclear. But this was stupid to even pursue as the SCOTUS precedent for state cases such as these is well established.
Now they have to deal with their angry base.

Since the liberal base wants to see their leaders insanely RESISTING with every erg of energy that they have just like them.
Also, the futile gesture still serves to foment the simpletons further wrt to the SCOTUS so as to prep them to accept the idea of cheating to win by packing the court down the road.
Finally, it takes pressure off of the massive mistake that Dem leaders made.
As the great Rush Limbaugh said, liberals prioritize symbolism over substance. What makes no sense logically still works for them for maintaining control of their devout because of their followers mental derangement and lack of actual knowledge.
