Climate advocates & Trump supporters here, would you support or against what Trump is considering:

Allow China to build limited EV in U.S. through joint ventures? The cheapest Chinese EV can be as low as $8000 ( 2022 price).

Just answer yes/no or support/against.

Let China open to US businesses, stop their incessant cyberattacks and IP theft, and then we can consider it. Ford is reported to have recently had talks with some Chinese EV manufacturers.

Was recently in Australia and BYD was everywhere, along with other Chinese brands that I am less familiar with. I know BYD is highly regarded. A WSJ reporter was able to arrange the use of one recently and was very impressed.

While I am sure that I already have several Chinese made products in my home (this MacBook Air I am typing on, for example), I don't think I could bring myself to buy a Chinese car.

When I worked in China the most popular cars were Buicks. I’ve heard that has changed. But they used to let lots of American cars in.

Probably not the best analogy

That's stupid, Japan is a democracy, an ally and manufactures cars in the US.

After a vicious WWII...America, in its 'Enlightened Self Interest' gave its money and intellect to help both Germany and Japan recover and get back on their feet again...not at all the mentality of DJT...and perhaps Xi's...but you would have a better handle on that than virtually anyone else here.

Why so political? Don’t forget in late 1980s & beginning of 1990s Japan was #1 enemy in US polls.

The danger of Japanese economic threat often passed that of USSR’s military threat in Americans’ mind. Ever watched the movie “Rising Sun” of early 1990s?

We should, as a political philosophy, only ally and partner with nations that share our core values. China does not. Between being an autocracy, stealing our technology, support of Russia/Iran, and the actual genocide on the Uyghurs; they don't share any of our core values.

And to our corporations that have sold their soul to China in the past, be ashamed.

Fuck China.

Than China in terms of human rights and democracy. Those countries treat women like shit. Double standards make your argument very weak.

Actually I tried to show you Americans in late 1980s and early 1990s didn’t use political standard to deal with business. They are concerned about their economic interests. They’re real.

Political junkies are not real.

But I don't think anything the Saudis are doing is as bad as this:

In power to implement this policy. That’s their policy.

Did you ever hear Trump accused Xi or Putin of dictatorship like Biden did? Never! Did you ever hear Trump accused China or Russia of being not democratic? Never!

Another example, Vietnam is one of last few communist countries. But U.S. have been wooing Vietnam for many years and with intention to substitute China with Vietnam as our cheap importer.

Geopolitics and economical interests transcend so called value. That’s what I can say to you.

It would bring down the price of cars for everyone.

I know some people fear that the Chinese would then be able to press a button and shut these cars off…but I won’t be driving one, so who cares.

Thank you for the honest answers. My answer is Yes. 1. It’s Reagan’s playbook.

But not because the name of Reagan, it’s because it worked and has been working well. Today we have US-made Toyota such as Camry, Thundra, Highlander. We also have US-made Honda, Mazda, Hyundai…

2. It creates jobs, obviously. Auto industry is one of biggest job creators.

3. It boosts US manufacturing which is what we badly need.

4. China allows Tesla to build factory there. Why we, labeling ourselves to represent free market capitalism, fear they build factories here? We against outsourcing our jobs and manufacturing overseas. Why we also against insourcing, capital inflow and job creation?

As for how good or successful US-made Chinese EV is, let market decide it.

Thread Level: 3

an $8000 EV is not possible. why would you bring in a subsidized vehicle to hurt US manufacturing?

Do I need to say more? It’s similar to Camry, According….although they are Japanese brand, they are made in USA. The whole situation is similar to late late 1980s and early 1999s. I am sure you know what I am talking about more than I do.
