In December 2000, days after shooting one victim who survived, shooting another who subsequently died, Reginald and Jonathan Carr broke into a townhouse in Wichita in which five young adults were present. After stealing their valuables, including an engagement ring that one of the male victims had hidden in anticipation of proposing, the brothers tied up all five victims, placing some in a closet, and began raping the two females present over an extended period of time. Then they forced the two female victims to have sex with each other. Then they forced the male victims to have sex with the two female victims. In the process of the the two perps raping the women, one of the brothers gave one of the female victims an STD. One of the brothers took one of the female victims to an ATM to steal her money. After more raping, the perps loaded up the victims into a car. Then the brothers lined up the five victims on a soccer field and shot them all in the head. One of the male victims continued to address their murderers as "sir." One of the victims was in the seminary. Another was a preschool teacher at a local Catholic school. Another was a high school teacher. Unfortunately, they were the sort of good people who don't understand what they're up against when confronted with the dregs of society. Miraculously, one of the female victims survived being shot in the head and after trying to help one of the male victims survive (he had blood pouring out of his eyes), she ran naked to a house for help. She had permanent scars on her knees from the carpet burns suffered during the extensive rapes by the brothers. Meanwhile, the brothers returned to the townhouse to look for anything else to steal. In the process, they decided to kill the surviving victim's dog with a golf club.
It's obscene and a slap in the face of the victims' families that these two are still breathing. The absurd number of appeals afforded to convicted murderers delays proper justice. A quarter of a century should never pass in any of these capital cases before justice is served.
