Instead of starting their own party they have infiltrated the Democrat Party and are sucking the life out of its tired old carcass.
But their base is anti-Western immigrants and the naive and unhappy young folks in big cities..
That's not a long term winning combination.

AI (ie., Captain Obvious) says:
Throughout the 20th century, socialist governments rose in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, often promising to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality, and place the needs of the people above those of the wealthy. Initially, these promises generated widespread enthusiasm, with citizens believing that government planning would be more efficient than free markets, collective ownership would ensure fairness, and centralized control would bring prosperity for all.
However, in practice, many of these systems fell short of expectations. A recurring problem was the concentration of power. When governments took control of large parts of the economy, leaders gained significant influence over employment, investment, production, and distribution. Over time, this authority often expanded into other areas of society, eroding economic and political freedoms. When livelihoods became heavily dependent on the state, dissent became harder, and individual choice more limited.
Another key factor was the impact of incentives. Human beings respond to rewards, risks, and opportunities. Free-market systems, despite their flaws, consistently encouraged innovation, entrepreneurship, and productivity, leading to economic growth. In contrast, heavily centralized systems often suffered from bureaucratic inefficiency, slow decision-making, and disconnection from local realities, resulting in shortages, inefficiencies, and declining productivity.
These conditions contributed to mass flight from socialist regimes. In Eastern Europe, for example, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 symbolized the mass exodus of people seeking freedom and economic opportunity Similar patterns occurred in other regions where citizens sought to escape political repression, economic stagnation, and the loss of personal freedoms.
In sum, history shows that while socialism began with noble ideals, its centralized control, loss of freedoms, and economic inefficiencies often drove millions to leave — not just politically, but physically — in search of better lives
very successful...and shown to be Non-Communist..."New Deal" Social Programs. Add to this, the reality the the USA did very well taxing the richest citizens...Progressively...up to 90% on their incomes in the 50's. So, an additional 2% NYC income tax isn't going to impoverish the City's most wealthy residents. Remember that the ratio of CEO to Avg. Worker compensation was 21:1 in 1965...while today it's over 300:1...especially in NYC.
As for your comments regarding other countries' experiences...note that most of Western Europe is much more Socialist than the U.S. and in no way will they ever embrace Communism i(or Fascism) n the future...they've seen it up close, and personally.
Don't forget that history also shows us what happens when a centralized Ruling Class ignores the needs and pleas of ordinary citizens...you get Revolutions, which never would have happened had there been honest efforts to satisfy the "Social" needs of the Populace.
One more thing..."Free Market" Systems do indeed have their flaws...including systemic ignorance of basic human needs...and that is what Mayor Mamdani is seeking to remedy.
I encourage you to read the attached NYT article with the headline..."Do Higher Taxes Drive the Rich Away? Mamdani's Plan Revives he Question"..

acknowledge the reality of the RCC's history of Pedophile Abuse...ergo, someone who easily takes the Conservative trope that any use of government sponsored Social Benefits immediately equates with a rapid slide into "Communism".
…following multiple tech owners fleeing the state’s massive taxes which is needed to fund their unsustainable policies.
CA is horribly positioned to compete in a free market after years of liberal policy slippage. It is rapidly turning into a dependent state - its only hope being either a change in political viewpoint and policy, or continuous bail outs at the expense of others.
This is why Dems support communism and socialism.
