IMO Socialism is gaining popularity because younger people don't define it like old farts who relate
to Stalin's Russia or Castro's Cuba. Like all things in life there are adaptions and names may stay the same but behaviors change. It's quite evident the Democratic Socialist are not advocating for government rule of business and personal property. Let's start there on the same premise of facts. They are not advocating for government handouts for primary sources to live. The closest example of that is the Trump admin handing out millions and millions of dollars to farmers not once but twice. That's because Trump is a populist that rides the coattails of Republicans.
The DS are not directly against Capitalism either. Based on my research they are party for the working person who wants to afford life, they are anti-Israel and against people like Elon Musk who is now a trillionaire.

A sense that there is an elite that is getting richer fast and screwing the little guy.
It's not wrong.
Should we name names from the elite Dem left that is getting richer by the minute?
Getting richer using means and connections that the "little guy" don't have access to.
