This may not be a bellwether, however, because the DSA candidate benefits from a huge Arab community in Dearborn.

Republicans are pulling for him.

they tried to do with FDR back in the 30's and 40's. Current DSA candidates are appealing to voters in Michigan and Maine over deeply held opinions on Affordability and the Abortion issue...especially in Maine, where Susan Collins failed them with her votes on the 'Big Beautiful Bill' and her confirmation of Kavanaugh, resulting in the overturning of Roe. Btw, recent polls show Dem chances in Maine sharply increasing now that Platner pulled out.

It'll be telling how those DSA candidates fare in November...and if elected...how they perform...for residents of their state, and the nation. Hard not to be an improvement over what Trump has done...and failed to do.

citizens...in addition to the rampant corruption and foreign/domestic policy decisions that defines the GOP under Trump is demonstrating. Look at any polling breakdown of issues across the country. Their votes are not for "Socialism" but rather attention to their real world needs..

Again, the GOP started that "Socialism = Communism" trope back in FDR's day...it's Bogus...as proven every day since then.

Trump's Presidency in both Domestic and International affairs. No way a Republican tries to run on DJT's performance...or their own lack of...

As for Dem voters responding to DSA candidates, they want solutions to their Needs...and some Moderates haven't delivered them. Of course, having a Congress completely controlled by Trump on so many of those issues, it's not entirely the Moderates fault, but many voters want action now, so they're shaking the 'Lineup'...NOT endorsing "Communism"...at all.

I’d characterize it a bit differently.

The shift which is now allowing DSA candidates to achieve actual power…began long ago…and is what allowed Trump to get the necessary support to be elected…as he was viewed by enough of the electorate as the only viable alternative offered.

The DSA to the Dems is no different than the Tea Party was to the GOP in the mid 2000s. They were a hard charging, want more action for the things they believed in and eventually those candidates made their way into office. I would not say any of them made their way to leadership and in fact the Chip Roy's, Andy Biggs, Ron Johnson, etc are just mouth pieces for the GOP/MAGA party now.

The DSA are gaining steam because they are addressing working people's issues. Trump garnered those same young people talking about those issues in 2023/2024 in his populistic ways but governed the 100% opposite as most rational thinking people knew he would.

p.s. You're welcome for today's lesson.

DSA calls for "a new democratic constitution that establishes civil, political, and democratic rights for all, is based on proportional representation in a single federal legislature."

The group also wants to abolish the Electoral College, expand the size of the House of Representatives, and allow convicts and noncitizens to vote. To get around checks and balances, DSA proposes to “limit the Supreme Court's power of judicial review."

The platform proposes a 32-hour workweek with “no reduction in pay or benefits.”

It also pushes college and housing "for all" through tuition-free higher education, as well as free room and board, and a "universal rent-control and the guaranteed right to counsel for all tenants."

This platform also lays out a wealth tax, which includes raising taxes for the richest earners, for-profit corporations, large inheritances, and private colleges and universities.

Reduced military budget

The party calls for the ending of sanctions in places such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran, as well as an “immediate and permanent” ceasefire in Gaza and “ending any military and economic aid, and weapons sales to Israel.”

It also calls to “end the war machine” by reducing military presence across the world.

as opposed to ceding all decision making to a "King", who happens to be deeply flawed in every possible way. Not every desire of the DSA members gets implemented, as we saw with Party's decision to go with Joe vs Bernie in 2020 and 2024.

As to your items of contention...

>'A single Federal Legislature'...not sure what you're saying, but sure that a change to our Constitutional Government is not in the offing.
>'Abolish the Electoral College'...unlikely, but worth discussing...it hasn't earned its existence thus far.
>'32 hr Work Week'...working from home and using AI is already lightening the work load...probably not going to happen in the near future.
>'Free College, and Housing'...Ireland along with other countries seem to be doing quite well with the College issue...and renters do need help...Dems have always supported
some form of assistance to the low and middle income members of our society.
>'Wealth Tax'...a definite part of the Dem Platform, w/o any push from DSA members...seems to strike a chord with most Americans.
>'Reduced Military Budget'...Eisenhower ("Beware of the Military/Industrial Complex") would join Democrats in studying that possibility.
>'Ending Sanctions, etc.'...Trump has proposed ending sanctions on Iran...not sue what your issue is...
>'End the War Machine...;...Dems support a strong military...and Congressional oversight on how it is used...Trump sees it as HIS 'Hammer' to be used however he wishes.

This Fall will be an opportunity for a Referendum on the Trumpian GOP...anxious to see how it turns out.

The GOP's "Open Borders" claim is just a Trope to rile up Republicans...while hiding their true colors. Trump takes it further by stopping Congress from carrying out it's Constitutional Responsibility to establish Policy and Funding for Immigration...
