Duterte aligns Philippines with China, says U.S. has lost

BEIJING (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced his "separation" from the United States on Thursday, declaring he had realigned with China as the two agreed to resolve their South China Sea dispute through talks.

Duterte made his comments in Beijing, where he is visiting with at least 200 business people to pave the way for what he calls a new commercial alliance as relations with longtime ally Washington deteriorate.

"In this venue, your honors, in this venue, I announce my separation from the United States," Duterte told Chinese and Philippine business people, to applause, at a forum in the Great Hall of the People attended by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli.

"Both in military, not maybe social, but economics also. America has lost."

His trade secretary, Ramon Lopez, said $13.5 billion in deals would be signed during the China trip.

"I've realigned myself in your ideological flow and maybe I will also go to Russia to talk to (President Vladimir) Putin and tell him that there are three of us against the world - China, Philippines and Russia. It's the only way," Duterte told his Beijing audience.

The guy is loosely hinged at best, but an adept foreign policy team would find a way to avoid the complete debacle that has occurred in the relations between our countries. Obama didn't create this problem, but he also hasn't managed it.

Once Obama was personally insulted by the guy, I knew his ego would not allow for anything but a total schism.

The Phillipinos ought to be very wary of what they are asking for here. This guy does not understand the threat that they represent.

So much for the pivot to Asia. If I were Taiwan, I would be worried about this.

China and Russia support a mismanaged third world country and who will come to their aid the next time a typhoon hits. All imports and exports to the Philippines need to be reduced drsatically. IMO we need to use the carrot and stick approach. This little prick has called Obama a bastard, a son of of a bitch and said the U.S. can go to hell. He's mad because we asked him not to kill drug dealers and drug addicts. Guys like him like our money but don't want to cooperate.

Can you cut ties with Africa too? Check trade data, in past 8 yrs China/Russia made huge money

and investments In Africa. What did U.S. do in the past 8 years? We built so many military bases and our military involvement in Africa reached at highest point. We used American tax payers' money to create peaceful environment for China/Russia make money there.

Wake up, time for American-interest first foreign policy.

Massacres of thousands of "drug dealers" and, many believe, political opponents. Strong-arming the press. Absolutely ignoring what he labels the corrupt legislature and judiciary. All the while cheered on by his base.

Adios, democracy.

Technology, Air Travel, information transmittal through the interwebs and social media makes globalization inevitable.

You can fight it in the short term and the backward old farts do mightily but it's going to happen in one or two generations.

Guys like you are the past not the future.

That was shown in the Brexit vote and will be here again in America in November when the young vote goes almost overwhelmingly to Hillary.

Keep bellowing like a dinosaur because that's what it is.

many "globalized" periods in history. So, you have no idea who really want to go back to the past.

Globalization is such a vogue term that most people use it without thinking much about what it means. Even people like you may understand it in your way, I am sure you never think the questions about the way you globalize the world, such as who controls it? which laws impose it and which authorities enforce it? Anyway, I don't really want to argue you about Globalization just like I don't really like to argue about democracy. I know your understanding is completely different than my understanding. It's just wasting time.

The empires you mention below are far different models of direct, authoritarian control. Even so, they, most notably the Brits brought an exchange of ideas, culture and trade that helped shaped the modern world. The British Empire also effectively ended the slave trade and kept the seas open for free world commerce, a role that we have taken over.

How governance will shake out, no one really knows, but one way or another it is going to be different from what we have today. It's a generational thing that's going to happen.

UK now can independently sign trade agreement with China. Is it against the tide of history? You mischaracterized the whole movement so badly. Liberals and neo con brainwash Americans to such a degree, that now if people say American interest first, UK people's interest first, Filipinos interest first, they are viewed as racists, nationalists.
