The amazing thing to me about this is either (1) no one around Trump knew not to do this, or (2) no one could convince him not to do this.
Either way, hopefully the Chinese will understand that we have just elected a man who has absolutely no idea what his is doing. No offense intended, Beijing! Right, boys?
From the article: “The Chinese leadership will see this as a highly provocative action, of historic proportions,” said Evan Medeiros, former Asia director at the White House national security council.
“Regardless if it was deliberate or accidental, this phone call will fundamentally change China’s perceptions of Trump’s strategic intentions for the negative. With this kind of move, Trump is setting a foundation of enduring mistrust and strategic competition for US-China relations.”

during the campaign that the Chinese are not trustworthy. He gave the notice
now we shall see what comes of it. It is my guess that China folds.
They have too much to lose. Too much money invested in USA.
It will be an interesting situation to keep an eye on.
BTW
Obama was and still an amateur. By give the Chinese reins he has hurt the USA. But that's for another discussion.
DT does nothing by accident.

He didn't actually call the Taiwan president. I just didn't know that. Interesting.
But in the end it doesn't matter. Off on the wrong foot with the chicoms.
they are already showing a massive vulnerability on this issue that they would need to put out such a lie in order to save face.
Brilliant move if initiated by Trump, but I suspect it was the Taiwanese.

...it probably made the soviets think twice, even though it was just a joke.
We may all die over an over-priced buffet.
They don't have many ICBMs...certainly not enough to threaten Buffalo, anyway. So, rest easy.

You know, when backing out of the TPP gifts the Pacific Rim to them economically.

Except maybe Evan Mc-whats-his-name. Geez, I wrote the guy in and can barely remember his name now.

No one understands the TPP, especially in Trump country. But it was a really good deal - almost all concessions were in part of other countries, like our insistence that Vietnam allow unions (to help OUR workers) - and now it's dead in the water.

Diplomacy is highly overrated anyway.
If the red gooks don't like it, Mad Dog will take care of them.
The important thing is AMERICA WILL BE GREAT AGAIN SOON!
DT is no amateur
Scant political experience. No military experience. Media unwilling to vet properly because of family background.
Ended the unwritten rule against appearances on late night talk shows in order to appear hip and cool...
All of this greased the skids for the tweeting, crass, carnival barker Trump.
In many ways I have little sympathy

Taiwan is not Tibet.
They would be the same, if China had its way.
Meeting with their leaders is also the same, from China's point of view.
But you are right that one is a mountain nation, and one is an island...totally different geography, therefore no political analogies can be drawn. Is that it?
If you doubt this, you should read up about what happened when Newt invited the Taiwanese president to speak at his alma mater, Cornell, in 1996.
The Chinese do not react the same way regarding Tibet and Taiwan. Not even close.

Or attack Taiwan dragging us into a war. Those are the two extremes I guess.
Say what you want about China, but they take the long view.
They have only been pushing on the disputed islands with Japan, Philippines, Vietnam because they knew that Obama would do nothing. They don't know that Trump will do nothing. They will tread more carefully.
Or we will go to war. We'll see.
