No one is going to start a nuke exchange on purpose, but the possibility of escalation by error always exists. You are familiar with the fact that the world did come close to nuclear war in 62 and also to a lesser extent in 73.
The point here is the potential conflict between Russia and u.s. leading to a nuke war today has probability much less than other nuclear countries, especially the countries in dangerous of being taken over by extremists. Both Obama and Putin said Russia is only regional power, not global power. Again, it is not cold war era.
