The threat from the debt is this: perhaps someday it will shake the confidence of markets about the ability of the US to manage its interest payments, which will raise the interest rates on those payments. That can lead to a problem. But interest rates remain at all-time lows.
We never have to pay it back. That's not a concern.

Question: What if we need to get into a war? What if we actually have a serious need to incur more debt, but be are near our limit because we incurred warlike debt when it was unnecessary?
