Let me tell you that when people try to say something to someone who has lost a close loved one, they often (usually) say stupid things or repeat cliches (and I doubt Trump did that in this case, but nonetheless it is true).
The aggrieved understand that the person is trying, and that is really all that matters.

That congressperson has attacked Trump incessantly for the past year. you may as well have had a story where Sean hannity heard a phone call from Hillary Clinton, and we are to accept his interpretation of events as well.
At least trump made the call, regardless of who you want to believe. i heard a group of Gold Star mothers who stated that Obama never bothered to call. maybe he was the smart one. But Trump tried.
